News Academy welcomes 22 studentsTopStory

Editors at The Oklahoma Daily have selected 22 OU students to make up the first class of News Academy.

The semester-long News Academy is an effort to better prepare Daily journalists by providing mentoring, opportunities to bond with peers and regular guidance and feedback from the paper's professional advisers, Judy Gibbs Robinson and Seth Prince.

The paper used ads and mass mail to invite OU students to apply, then selected 22 based on an aptitude test and interviews conducted Jan. 19.

Those chosen for News Academy will attend 12 basic journalism classes over the semester and fulfill other requirements, including working with peer editors, writing at least four newspaper articles and handling weekly "desk duties" in The Daily newsroom. Candidates who complete the program will receive paid staff positions in the fall 2015 semester.

The paper will begin accepting applications for the fall 2015 News Academy in April.
