Career Fair Advice from the Faculty
Many of the same tried and true career fair tips and tricks still apply to Gaylord students, but the traditional rules of taking on a career fair aren't as strict for the JMC crowd. Ingenuity, presentation and clips count for much more here than they would at the Sooner Showcase or the Engineering Career fair.

Be creative, show your talents and take these Gaylord professors' tips into account -- after all, they've been here for many more career fairs than the average student.

    David Craig
Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and President's Associated Presidential Professor

"Have a resume ready, and do your homework on the companies that will be at the career fair. Think of questions to ask them. Even if you're a freshman, it's never to early to make connections."

    Mel Odom
    Professional Writing Instructor

"Have a business card ready, perhaps instead of a resume.

On front, have contact info (maybe even a small headshot).

On back, links to Weebly, blog, other online writing.
    "

    Scott Hodgson
    Gaylord Family Research Professor
    1. Your first impression goes a long way. It goes beyond what you are wearing. Your confidence in approaching the table, how you shake hands, your ability to maintain eye contact, how you introduce yourself, the questions you ask ... these are as important as the qualifications you layout your resume.

    2. Before you approach a very interesting looking table at a career fair, Google the company and find out as much as you can about the organization. That little extra effort to show a perspective employer that you are interested in their company makes it easier for them to be interested in you.

2015 New York Times Journalism Institute
    Learning Institute
    Tucson, AZ
    Deadline: November 1
Preferred applicants: Computer gurus and NAHJ-affiliated students

    Click to learn more
The 2015 New York Times Student Journalism Institute gives students the chance to work for two weeks with the journalists of The New York Times.

During the program, which runs May 16 to 31, 2015, students (and May 2015 graduates) cover real news events under the supervision of newsroom staffers of The Times.

The Institute provides opportunities for young journalists to participate in any activity that would be found in a major newsroom: reporting, photography, copy editing, web and page design, web production, video and interactive coding.  Students can pick an area to focus on and work closely with Times journalists who are experts in that specialty.

As journalism evolves, so does the Institute, and this year we are giving special consideration to applicants with the software skills needed to build interactive graphics and databases. In fact, we're looking for students who may have little news experience but lots of computer experience. Before they sign up for a Silicon Valley giant, we'd like to show them how much fun and satisfaction a newsroom can provide.

Along with the opportunity to work closely with some of the best journalists in the nation, students become part of a tight-knit network of Institute alumni. Former participants work in every major news organization in the U.S., including The Times itself.

The 2015 Institute will be held at the University of Arizona in Tucson. There is no cost to a student. Room, board and transportation to and from Tucson is all paid by The New York Times

In odd-numbered years like 2015, the Institute is held in cooperation with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and participants must be members of NAHJ.

    Note from the Institute:

We have moved the deadline for mailing an application to Nov. 1, 2014. That's in line with the 2015 summer internship deadlines of many major news organizations (including The Times).

Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE)
    Summer Ethics Fellowship
    Deadline: January 6

FASPE seeks applications for its 2015 journalism fellowships.

FASPE Journalism, a component of a larger program that works in several professional fields, uses the conduct of reporters and other media professionals during the Holocaust and in Nazi Germany as a launching point for an intensive course of study on journalism ethics.

FASPE is predicated upon the power of place, and in particular the first-hand experience of visiting Auschwitz and traveling through Germany and Poland where Fellows study the past,
connecting to it in ways that no classroom-based course can, and consider how to apply the lessons of history as they confront the ethical challenges of their profession today.

Fellowships include travel from New York to Berlin, Krakow, and Oświęcim (Auschwitz), where Fellows work with leading faculty to explore ethics and history. Seminars will cover topics such as: balancing the cost and benefits of access; the chal-lenges of fact-checking crime victims; the implications of new technology on journalism ethics; and the role of journalists in creating and remembering the historical narrative.

Ten to 15 journalists early in their career and graduate students planning to work as journalists will be chosen to participate in the 2015 trip, which will run from Sunday, May 24 to Thursday, June 4. Fellowships cover all program costs, including international and European travel, lodging, and food.

To apply or to learn more about FASPE visit: www.FASPE.info.

FASPE programs are non-denominational. Students of all religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Completed applications are due by January 6, 2015. To be eligible applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of application or be a working journalist who earned his/her undergraduate degree between June 2010 and June 2014. Notification will be emailed by March 1.
