Applications Still being accepted for National Student Advertising Competition team
The National Student Advertising Competition team is seeking applicants for the spring team. NSAC is the premier student competition with over 150 schools participating. Schools develop a complete marketing plan from an actual case study for a national brand and present their plan at the district competition in Dallas. If successful, students advance to nationals at the American Advertising Federation's convention in Las Vegas. This year's client is Pizza Hut. We are seeking applicants for account planners/interactive strategists, research, graphic/interactive designers, copywriters, cinematographers and media. NSAC is a capstone course and can be substituted for the ad campaigns course. If you are talented, motivated and able to work within an advertising agency structure contact Phil Willet, pwillet@ou.edu, for application information. |

Many of the same tried and true career fair tips and tricks still apply to Gaylord students, but the traditional rules of taking on a career fair aren't as strict for the JMC crowd. Ingenuity, presentation and clips count for much more here than they would at the Sooner Showcase or the Engineering Career fair.
Be creative, show your talents and take these Gaylord professors' tips into account -- after all, they've been here for many more career fairs than the average student.

Have a resume ready, and do your homework on the companies that will be at the career fair. Think of questions to ask them. Even if you're a freshman, it's never to early to make connections.

| 1. Your first impression goes a long way. It goes beyond what you are wearing. Your confidence in approaching the table, how you shake hands, your ability to maintain eye contact, how you introduce yourself, the questions you ask ... these are as important as the qualifications you layout your resume. 2. Before you approach a very interesting looking table at a career fair, Google the company and find out as much as you can about the organization. That little extra effort to show a perspective employer that you are interested in their company makes it easier for them to be interested in you.

'V-Day 11.11.11' shares the stories of service men and women
|
|
Gaylord will be holding a screening of the award-winning documentary "Veterans Day 11.11.11" at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, November 6, in the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium. Associate broadcast and electronic media professor Suzanne Chandler will host a discussion after the screening.
"Veterans Day 11.11.11" tells the unique stories of our nation's men and women who selflessly dedicate their lives in service. Filmed on November 11, 2011, and beyond, this documentary follows our veterans through one historic day and examines what it's like to be a U.S. veteran. The range and depth of perspectives included in the film is broad, as stories range from the Civil War Battle of Pittsburg captured at the Shiloh National Military Park to modern day conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The film's Facebook page places emphasis on the telling of the veteran's stories, and Chandler will focus on that same strong storytelling in her discussion on the film.
"This event is exciting because our community veterans are honored by the intimate stories included in the 90-minute film, and documentary students experience firsthand the impact on an audience through the medium of visual storytelling," Chandler said. "By holding the screening at Gaylord, my hopes are to inspire students to tell stories they care about while thanking and honoring our veterans for their service."
Chandler is one of an elite group of photographers and videographers director John C.P. Goheen reached out to in order to realize the film. Over 40 of the country's most accomplished video storytellers, many of them national "Photographer of the Year" award winners, were asked to participate, but only 15 stories were picked up for the final release of the documentary. Chandler's was among them.
The result is a remarkably diverse and unique documentary that tells the stories of veterans in their own words. The 15 profiles are often poles apart in content, in the types of characters they profile, in supporting material and, ultimately, in style.
To unite these individually distinct stories, five veterans of different eras serve as the thread between them as they provide a veteran-to-veteran roundtable perspective.
In keeping with the theme of many veterans, one of the most unusual aspects of the production is that all contributors donated their time to work on this project. They agreed to use their own equipment and storytelling skills, often spending their own money on travel expenses with no guarantee anyone's work would be selected to be in the film.
