Chronicling America's Wars brings guest lecturer to campus
|
|
Franz Bumeder, the director of Bavarian Affairs for the German public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk in Munich, will be visiting Tuesday as a guest of the Presidential Dream Course, Chronicling America's Wars.
A German radio correspondent, Bumeder covered wars throughout eastern Europe including Kosovo, Bosnia-Hercekovina, Croatia and Macedonia. The decade of wars left more than 100,000 people dead before the U.S.-led NATO forces intervened and a United Nations Protection Force deployed.
He has been a member of a reporting team organized by German Public Radio covering crisis worldwide including in Latin America and Pakistan.
Bumeder will be giving a lecture entitled "The U.S., NATO and Balkan Wars" in the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium on October 14 at 6 p.m.

Explore the challenges modern media faces with 'Shadows of Liberty'
|
Gaylord will be showing a free screening of the documentary feature "Shadows of Liberty" this Thursday evening. "Shadows of Liberty" reveals the extraordinary truth behind the news media: censorship, cover-ups and corporate control. In highly revealing stories, renowned journalists, activists and academics give insider accounts of a broken media system. Controversial news reports are suppressed, people are censored for speaking out, and lives are shattered as the arena for public expression is turned into a private profit zone. Tracing the story of media manipulation through the years, " Shadows of Liberty" poses a crucial question: why have we let a handful of powerful corporations write the news?
The screening will be held Thursday, October 16, at 7 p.m. in the Excellence and Ethics in Journalism Foundation Auditorium.
