This year Gaylord College entered 15 student productions in the South Central Broadcasting Society competition. Fourteen out of 15 entries earned recognition. Students from six states took part in the competition. Gaylord College students earned four Grand Prizes, with eight other entries making it to Finalist and two more getting Honorable Mention.

The Grand Prize winners are KGOU's Molly Evans (Audio Podcast, "Painting to Your Own Beat") and Hayley Thornton (Audio News Program, "Assignment: Radio 4-27-14") along with Doug Murray (Video Podcast, "Dick Pryor Profile") and the Sooner Sports Pad team of Carter Baum, Amanda Yates and Matthew Fresquez for their final program of the Fall 2013 semester (Video Sports Program).

The awards were presented on Saturday, September 27, at the SCBS Fall Conference at Oklahoma Christian in Edmond.  Special thanks should go to KGOU's Brian Hardzinski, Lynn Franklin and Kyle Bergersen for assistance in gathering entries for submission at the end of the spring 2014 semester.

Gaylord College had nine attendees at this year's SCBS Conference.  Dean Joe Foote led a group that included Oklahoma College Broadcasters President Erick Payne; OCB members Daniel Hinson, Crawford Martin and Aimee Schnebeck; Gaylord College TV News Director Bob Dickey; Gaylord Sports Director Barry Orr and faculty members Suzanne Chandler and Ken Fischer.

The all-day event included topical sessions in the morning and early afternoon followed by the annual SCBS Awards Ceremony.  Highlights included sessions from WFAA-TV's Executive Producer Meagan Harris and KOCO-TV's Wendall Edwards.  Gaylord faculty member Barry Orr appeared on a panel entitled "Sports, Sales and Other Opportunities." The same panel also featured the voice of the Oklahoma City Redhawks, Alex Freedman.

The SCBS Conference was sponsored by Oklahoma Christian University and Oklahoma State University.  The conference was combined with a Broadcast Education Association District 5 Research Session and an Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association meeting.

Gaylord faculty member Ken Fischer conducted an OBEA Business Meeting during the conference as the organization's 2014-2015 president.  At the end of the SCBS Awards Ceremony, Fischer was surprised with a special service award.  SCBS Coordinator Tony DeMars said, "The award is in recognition of Fischer's outstanding support of student media."

Canadian director, producer to screen new film at GaylordUpcoming2
Paul Saltzman, a two-time Canadian Emmy Award-winning film and television producer-director, will screen his new film, "The Last White Knight - Is Reconciliation Possible?" at in Gaylord's  Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. on Thurs., Oct. 2.

Paul Saltzman

The screening will be followed by a question and answer session with the filmmaker, and the event is free and open to the public.

"The Last White Knight" was inspired by an incident that happened to Saltzman while he was working with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee to register African American voters in the South in the early 1960s. On one of this first days there, he was assaulted by a group of young men led by Byron "Delay" De La Beckwith, the son of the man convicted of killing civil rights activist Medgar Evers.

In the film, Saltzman is "reunited" with Beckwith over 40 years later to talk about the incident and discuss if his views have changed and how the South has changed.

The film also features Mississippi resident Morgan Freeman, reflecting on the state of race relations in Mississippi today, and lifelong activist Harry Belafonte who was also in the South at the same time as Saltzman in the 1960s.

One of the most chilling moments in the film is an interview with three hooded, current members of the KKK.

Click movie poster to watch the film's trailer.

Saltzman's filmography includes many dramas and documentaries, including the 2008 documentary feature,

"Prom Night in Mississippi." He is also known for his association with The Beatles, a group Saltzman met in India in 1968. But his filmmaking concern has been primarily with social issues. He founded the charitable, non-profit organization, "Moving Beyond Prejudice," which works with students, educators, youth-at-risk and community groups.

While on campus, Saltzman

will also attend various classes, and do a workshop on film and media production careers, Friday afternoon from 1 - 3 p.m. in the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium with Professors Andrew Horton and J. Madison Davis.

His visit to campus is sponsored by the departments of Political Science, History, English, Communication, the Programs of African and African-American Studies, Women & Gender Studies/Social Justice, Film & Media Studies, and the Gaylord College of Journalism.
Prepare for the JMC Career and Internships Fair Upcoming3

The biggest career fair on campus for journalism and communications students is the JMC Career and Internships Fair, scheduled this year for Oct. 23 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m in the Gaylord Lobby.

The JMC Career Fair is meant to save both students and employers some time, bringing communications majors and the employers hoping to hire them together in one place.

To make the most of your time at the career fair, Career Services offers some suggestions of ways to prepare ahead of time.

Activate your HireSooner account! You've brought copies of your resume to the career fair and coded your own CV website, why work on an e-listing in HireSooner that no one may ever see?

Because it matters.

Your HireSooner account will do convenient, boring tasks for you, like fill out your name tags for career and internships fairs like this, but it will also add you to the OU listing of job-seeking students. From there, Career Services will match your major, degree and interests to hiring employers and will send you a list of potential positions that match your criteria, if you would like.

Once your HireSooner profile is complete, you can also upload a resume to be included in the OU online resume books.

With resumes, the more visibility, the better your odds for finding a job, so be sure to take the extra step to upload a current resume before the career fair. It will save you time in the future.

Before you head in to the career and internship fair, though, be sure to have your resume critiqued by Career Services. Specialists will be on-hand to help you structure your resume to draw attention to the
highlights of your career.

One resume structure definitely does not fit all.
Designers have more leeway with the structure of their resumes than most other specialties.
Sometimes it's better to use a chronological resume over a skills-focused resume.

Career Services have the folks who know which structure is bound to grab an employer's attention in your field. And if you have too much or too little of that pesky white space, they can help you flesh out and focus your resume before you present it to a potential employer, too.

So your HireSooner account is active. Your resume has been critiqued, and it's in the online resume books. What now?

Dress for the occasion.

Typically, Career Services holds interview prep workshops throughout the semester that include workshops on how to dress for an interview. Unfortunately, no workshops have been scheduled in preparation for the JMC Career and Internship Fair.

In lieu of in-person workshops, career fair and interview dress is a slight no-brainer. Look nice, and dress professionally. If you happen to be relatively new to the career fair and interview world, some standard tips on professional dress can be found on the Career Services website.

Lastly, make sure you have a way to easily show potential employers your portfolio.

It's always a good idea to have a version of your portfolio in online form and to include its URL on your resume or on a card you can give to employers at the career fair.

As JMC students, we are what we create, and most employers will want to go through your clips before hiring you. Save them the trouble of having to ask for samples and introduce your portfolio when you introduce your resume by including its URL on everything you plan to hand out at the career fair.
