Focus On: Optimal Resume
AN ONLINE RESUME BUILDER THAT USES TEMPLATES AND SECTIONS TO HELP USERS CREATE PAPER AND ONLINE RESUMES
|

The first thing an employer sees, oftentimes, is your resume. To help students make the best first impression, Career Services offers free access to Optimal Resume.
Optimal Resume is a program created for job seekers to be able to create a clean, well-organized resume quickly and easily. Optimal Resume also allows users to store past resumes and organize them for easy access in the future.
To begin a resume, users can choose from templates or begin with a bank document, but the most useful option is to build a custom resume using section sets.
 | |
Optimal Resume offers three ways to start a new resume: samples, section sets or a blank document.
|
With section sets, users can choose which sections to have in a resume and what order they go in, but the design of the resume is ultimately still up to them. It's a wonderful alternative to using Word templates and offers a whole lot more options than more common programs.
Optimal Resume also carries major-specific templates, for those who aren't sure how to make a great, creative media-oriented resume just yet. There are 68 templates to choose from, and a few of these are specifically for JMC-type specialties.
Besides the options Optimal Resume has for common paper resumes, the app also helps users to create a career-focused website. The program allows users to select which uploaded or created resumes to include on the website and includes a sidebar with online share options.
 | |
Websites generated by Optimal Resume are very basic but should work well for beginners.
|
The websites look very basic and could be great for students who don't have a lot of web experience, but if you're no stranger to CSS or HTML, you may just want to code your own. The basic templates for the web resume are reminiscent of 90s dial-up web pages and definitely do not demonstrate much web knowledge.
If you're looking to wow an online editor or manager with your web knowledge, don't use Optimal Resume for your web resume, make one yourself. But, if you're new to coding, or don't plan to design websites for a career, Optimal Resume creates well-organized, easy to read websites that will get your resume across to a larger audience.
For more bells and whistles, though, you may want to try a WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") site like Wordpress or Wix to host your online resume.
To long in to Optimal Resume, use the Career Services portal here. You can find first-time usage instructions here.

2015 New York Times Journalism Institute
Learning Institute
Tucson, AZ
Deadline: November 1
Preferred applicants: Computer gurus and NAHJ-affiliated students
 | | Click to learn more |
The 2015 New York Times Student Journalism Institute gives students the chance to work for two weeks with the journalists of The New York Times.
During the program, which runs May 16 to 31, 2015, students (and May 2015 graduates) cover real news events under the supervision of newsroom staffers of The Times.
The Institute provides opportunities for young journalists to participate in any activity that would be found in a major newsroom: reporting, photography, copy editing, web and page design, web production, video and interactive coding. Students can pick an area to focus on and work closely with Times journalists who are experts in that specialty.
As journalism evolves, so does the Institute, and this year we are giving special consideration to applicants with the software skills needed to build interactive graphics and databases. In fact, we're looking for students who may have little news experience but lots of computer experience. Before they sign up for a Silicon Valley giant, we'd like to show them how much fun and satisfaction a newsroom can provide.
Along with the opportunity to work closely with some of the best journalists in the nation, students become part of a tight-knit network of Institute alumni. Former participants work in every major news organization in the U.S., including The Times itself. The 2015 Institute will be held at the University of Arizona in Tucson. There is no cost to a student. Room, board and transportation to and from Tucson is all paid by The New York Times.
In odd-numbered years like 2015, the Institute is held in cooperation with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and participants must be members of NAHJ.
Note from the Institute: We have moved the deadline for mailing an application to Nov. 1, 2014. That's in line with the 2015 summer internship deadlines of many major news organizations (including The Times).

Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics (FASPE)
Summer Ethics Fellowship Deadline: January 6
FASPE seeks applications for its 2015 journalism fellowships.
FASPE Journalism, a component of a larger program that works in several professional fields, uses the conduct of reporters and other media professionals during the Holocaust and in Nazi Germany as a launching point for an intensive course of study on journalism ethics.
FASPE is predicated upon the power of place, and in particular the first-hand experience of visiting Auschwitz and traveling through Germany and Poland where Fellows study the past, connecting to it in ways that no classroom-based course can, and consider how to apply the lessons of history as they confront the ethical challenges of their profession today.
Fellowships include travel from New York to Berlin, Krakow, and Oświęcim (Auschwitz), where Fellows work with leading faculty to explore ethics and history. Seminars will cover topics such as: balancing the cost and benefits of access; the chal-lenges of fact-checking crime victims; the implications of new technology on journalism ethics; and the role of journalists in creating and remembering the historical narrative.
Ten to 15 journalists early in their career and graduate students planning to work as journalists will be chosen to participate in the 2015 trip, which will run from Sunday, May 24 to Thursday, June 4. Fellowships cover all program costs, including international and European travel, lodging, and food.
To apply or to learn more about FASPE visit: www.FASPE.info.
FASPE programs are non-denominational. Students of all religious, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Completed applications are due by January 6, 2015. To be eligible applicants must be enrolled in a graduate program at the time of application or be a working journalist who earned his/her undergraduate degree between June 2010 and June 2014. Notification will be emailed by March 1.
