Student receives grant to support lawsuit
Sunday, the FOI Oklahoma Inc. board of directors approved a grant to help student member and OU senior Joey Stipek proceed in his lawsuit against the university. Stipek filed the lawsuit in May 2013, after university staff refused to allow him access student parking ticket records. According to the university, parking records fall under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, but Stipek argues that these files are subject to the Open Records Act.

Application deadlines for many 2015 journalism internships and workshops will be coming up in the beginning of November.
Check out some of the internships Gaylord wants you to know about, and look for our Career and Internship Newsletter this Thursday to get more details and see if any new employers have been added.
DNJF editing and business reporting internship
The application deadline is November 3 for summer 2015 Dow Jones News Fund editing and business reporting internships. These are paid internships at news organizations around the country. Previous OU students have gone to The New York Times, Dallas Morning News, Austin American-Statesman, Indianapolis Star, San Francisco Chronicle and other places. The editing internships include digital, sports and news editing. Students will complete one editing application and indicate their preferences (digital, sports, news) in order.
A completed application includes an editing test, which will be given in
The Oklahoma Daily newsroom the week of October 20. NYT Institute
The application deadline is November 1 for a New York Times Institute in Tucson, Arizona. During the program, which runs May 16 to 31, 2015, students (and May 2015 graduates) cover real news events under the supervision of newsroom staffers of The Times.
The Institute provides opportunities for young journalists to participate in any activity that would be found in a major newsroom: reporting, photography, copy editing, web and page design, web production, video and interactive coding. Students can pick an area to focus on and work closely with Times journalists who are experts in that specialty.
You can obtain more information about the Institute and see the work done at previous Institutes at nytimes-institute.com.
Star Tribune Internship
The application deadline is November 1 for a 2015 summer internship in Minneapolis at Star Tribune.
This 10-week internship, which pays $706 a week, is a great opportunity for students who are prepared for it.
The Journal Record Legislative Session Internship
The Journal Record is currently accepting applications for a paid legislative session internship that begins January 2015 and runs through May.
The internship will:
· Work with your class schedule
· Give you the opportunity to build your portfolio with published materials
· Provide you the opportunity to interact with legislators and state officials, legislative staff, lobbyists, and reporters.
· Offer a letter of recommendation for those who excel during the session.
Please send your resume and two writing samples to Thessali Teague, Legislative Report Specialist, at Thessali.Teague@JournalRecord.com or Kori Casey, Legislative Report Coordinator, at Kori.Casey@JournalRecord.com.

Title announced for 'One Campus, One Book'
|

This year's book, selected by President Boren, is "Time to Start Thinking: America in the Age of Descent" by Edward Luce.
Luce, a reporter for the Financial Times, takes a look at many of the challenges America is currently facing. In the book, Luce addresses the changing U.S. economy, polarization of American politics, public education and more.
To accompany this book, SGA has created an eight-week program that follows each of the issues Luce covers.
Week one is scheduled to begin next Monday, Sept. 29.
Five hundred books are available for sale to students, faculty and staff who wish to participate in the campus-wide discussion. For $5 you can order your copy of the book and pick it up immediately from the Bizzell Memorial Library circulation desk. To learn more about the program's structure, read reviews on the title or to sign up for the initiative, head to the one book website.
