8 p.m.

The death of 18-year-old Michael Brown shook his hometown of Ferguson, Missouri, and took over the media as one of the top stories of 2014.

Recent reports on the tragedy indicate that eyewitnesses saw Brown's hands raised in surrender before police Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson shot the young man.

Though shocking, this incident is one that has repeated itself in neighborhoods across the country time and time again. Too frequently, it appears as if a person's race affects the way they are perceived by the police as well as the media.

Join students, leaders, advocates and professors at "Hands Up? Shot Down?" to discuss race, the media, and ethics in the wake of the tragic death of Michael Brown.

Join in the discussion Wednesday, September 10, in the Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation Auditorium, Gaylord 1140, at 8 p.m.

Free Software Classes Teach Students Important Media and Design AppsUpcoming1
Apps, applications, software, programs, or executables - it doesn't matter what they're called - as Gaylord students, we have a lot of programs to learn in order to be successful in the media. But Gaylord encompasses so many majors that not every program offers instruction on these apps.

Gaylord will be hosting a series of workshops most Fridays in September to give every student the opportunity to learn these programs, regardless of whether it is used in a student's major or not.

The first class, on Final Cut, was held September 5, and workshops on two of Adobe's major media apps are still coming up.

Don't miss out on this useful (and cost-free) series organized by OU IT software specialist Michael Acker!

Photoshop 101
Friday, September 12
Gaylord 1120
10 a.m.

Why it's important to know:
  • Photoshop is used everywhere now.
  • Writers use it to design covers or prepare photos for use (typically) online, in blogs and other self-publications.
  • PR, marketing and ad specialists will most likely use it regularly with visuals for both printed and online materials.
  • Broadcast media uses Photoshop to help to create graphics for shows.
Any visual will (most likely) end up going through Photoshop before being published, so it is important to at least be familiar with the program.
InDesign 101
Friday, September 19
Gaylord 1120
10 a.m.

Why it's important to know:

  • A person can live without knowing InDesign, I do hear it's possible, but toying with Microsoft Word's formatting or using an open source design kit tends to be even more difficult than just learning InDesign and getting it over with.
  • Writers can use it for self publishing books, zines, shorts, etc., with clean, professional design.
  • PR, marketing and ad specialists could end up using the program extensively to create promotional materials.
  • Broadcast may still use InDesign, since the program is not simply for print materials anymore. Having any basic InDesign knowledge will be more appealing to hiring managers.

InDesign is, first and foremost, a design program. It is the most well-known of the design programs, but it is not the only one. However, InDesign's interface is similar to other design programs' interfaces, and being acquainted with this program will definitely make other design programs much easier to grasp.

Google Media TrainingUpcoming2
