News and Announcements
OU president David Boren has historically been a supporter of education abroad programs, authoring the legislation that established the national program Boren Awards to help fund international study for qualified students.

In 2009, Boren set a university-wide goal to increase the number of students studying abroad by 50 percent in the next four years. By the end of January this year, Boren was close to meeting his goal, after seeing a 39 percent increase in students studying abroad.

To ensure that students will have the opportunity to gain international experience, OU offers specialty-focused study abroad classes as well as scholarships and fellowships to help ease the financial burden of studying away from home.

Gaylord College does its part to help students study outside of the continental U.S. as well, offering programs to expose media and communications students to different cultures while learning from experts in their field both at home and abroad.

While most study abroad courses offered by Gaylord occur in the summer, two take place over winter intersession and a third requires a fall application. Be aware of deadlines for these classes and apply early.

International Advertising
Who should enroll: advertising majors

International Advertising (JMC 4303/5303) is a three credit hour class that encompasses study here, in Oklahoma, as well as in two or three foreign countries.

international ad

Taught by Jim Avery, International Advertising has been offered every winter break for 12 years. The class studies a bit about advertising and its international application here in Oklahoma and then travels to Europe or Asia to learn a little more.

Some past students have commented that the class is more a review of agencies than of advertising as a whole. That could be true because International Advertising will spend a lot of time visiting working professionals in top agencies worldwide. However, the class will also explore the cultures of the places we visit and will give students the opportunity to learn from professionals who work every day in the markets we will visit.

The class will meet a few times this fall to get grounded and is predicted to leave the U.S. in early January to return Sunday, January 11, in time for the beginning of the spring semester.

For more information, contact instructor Jim Avery at javery@ou.edu or attend the class' upcoming information session Wednesday, September 10 at 4 p.m. in the presentation room in Lindsey+Asp.

British Media Study Abroad
Who should enroll: broadcast and electronic media majors, limited opportunities for public relations and advertising majors

The British Media Studies class is a six-hour study abroad opportunity available to Gaylord students during May intersession.
British Media

With this class, students

visit top management, account executives, and reporters/editors from many different organizations in London, Paris, Bristol and Cardiff.

In the past, the class has visited BBC, Al Jazeera, Bloomberg News and CNN Paris, among other stellar international news agencies.

Visits are tailored toward broadcast and electronic media majors, but one-hour independent study is available for students who are interested in studying public relations, photography or videography.

Though the class doesn't head oversea until May 2015, registration opens October 13, 2014, and class begins on-campus in March.

To complete registration for the class, students must enroll in both British Media Studies, taught by Ralph Beliveau, and British Media Systems, taught by Joe Foote.

No information sessions have been announced for the class yet.

For more information, contact coordinator Kathy Adams at kadams@ou.edu.

Student Media welcomes Gaylord alumni to teamUpcoming1

Seth Prince, journalism 2000, and Heather Brumley Howard, public relations 2001, have returned to OU as members of the Student Media professional staff.

Howard, who has been adviser to Norman High School's prize-winning yearbook, will serve as advertising and marketing manager. Prince left The Oregonian in Portland, where he spent 14 years, most recently as sports editor, to become yearbook, digital and design adviser.

The appointments were announced over the summer by Student Media Director Nick Jungman, journalism 1997.  With the appointments, the Student Media professional staff is at full strength for the first time since December 2012.

Learn for free with PaceSetterUpcoming2
One of the most useful perks Gaylord offers students is an online tutorial site called PaceSetter. Though use of PaceSetter is required for some 3000-level classes, not every major will be exposed to the program in class. For that reason, PaceSetter offers a category called "Learning on Demand" where interested students can go to learn the basics of some of the most widely-used, contemporary editing and design programs available.

If you're a self starter, PaceSetter is a great opportunity to become familiar with popular software in the media and communications field while gaining experience in programs that could give you the edge in future job searches.

PaceSetter currently offers instruction on InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop as well as Flash, Final Cut X and AVID. The program is available online and can be accessed from home.
