aTinker Tour: Thursday, April 10

Mary Beth Tinker, who changed First Amendment law for students at the Supreme Court in the 1969 Tinker v. Des Moines case, will be at OU all day Thursday, April 10, as part of a national tour of college and high school campuses.

Tinker was the named plaintiff in the landmark case in which the Supreme Court declared that students do not "shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate" and that "students are possessed of fundamental rights which the State must respect, just as they themselves must respect their obligations to the State."

Last fall, the Tinker Tour began "a journey across the country to promote youth voices, free speech and a free press" on Constitution Day next to the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. Since then it has traveled some 20,000 miles and been part of events involving more than 20,000 students and teachers at more than 60 stops.
