It's another successful year for the University of Oklahoma at the National Broadcasting Society National Convention.  OU was awarded 4 Grand Prizes (1st Place) at the NBS Awards Ceremony Saturday evening March 15.  Gaylord College Alumnus working in the LA market, (front from left to right)

Kelsey Hightower, Emily Calhoun, Chelsea Holeman, accepted the Grand Prize awards on behalf of the OU winners.

dSociety of Professional Journalists Region 8 Mark of Excellence Winners

The Oklahoma Daily (professional writing senior Kyle Margerum, editor) has placed in the Best College Newspaper and Best Affiliated Website categories in the Society of Professional Journalists Region 8 Mark of Excellence contest.

 

The Oklahoma Daily's other winners include Paighten Harkins in both the Feature Writing and Breaking News Reporting category and Julia Nelson in the Sports Column Writing category and as co-author with Paighten in the Breaking News category.

 

OUTV's winners are Erik Macias in the Television Sports Reporting category, Karl Macias in the Television Feature Reporting category, Justin Voda, Doug Murray and Alicia Clifton in the Television General News Reporting category. 

 

KGOU-FM's winner is Kate Carlton in the Radio News Reporting category. 

 

Those honored will learn whether the awards are firsts, seconds or thirds at the SPJ Region 8 conference March 29 in Houston. First-place winners will be sent on to compete in the national Mark of Excellence competition.

eFirst OU student elected to PRSSA National Committee

Dea Pennington, current OU PRSSA VP and Asst. PR Director for Lindsey + Asp, was elected to the position of Vice President for Professional Development on the 2014-2015 PRSSA National Committee. She is the first National Committee member in the 45 year history of the OU PRSSA Chapter! 

 

The National Committee, composed of 10 PRSSA students, is responsible for setting goals for the organization that serves more than 11,500 members in more than 350 Chapters internationally to ensure the Society's growth, advancement and achievement. Dea, whose term begins June 1 for one year, is responsible for working with PRSSA Nationally Affiliated Student-run Firms, promoting PRSA/PRSSA relationships and creating professional development programs fro PRSSA.

PRSSA is hosting a competition between the student organizations that correspond with each major. Whichever major buys the most T-shirts, PRSSA will give 10 percent of the total earnings to the corresponding student organization.

gContest for Strategic Communication Majors 

M&C Saatchi in Kuala Lumpur is having a contest among our strategic communication majors for a three month internship. 

The contest question will be on national branding.  Students will write about which country's branding they admire and why, and what campaign do they think helped change or shape perception for a country.  Reports are due to Jim Avery, no later than April 14.  

 

"If you want to be creative, lean in to your work, and find an adventure, apply for the M&C Saatchi KL internship. It's three months, accommodations are covered, and work opportunities are unlimited," said Jackie Fulkerson, last year's internship winner and current M&C Saatchi/KL full-time employee.

The Summer in Washington, D.C., Program immerses Gaylord College students into the culture of government and politics in the Nation's capitol. Students are exposed to campaign, governance and interest group politics through periodic gatherings, featuring political practitioners and national political journalists. oNew Dream Course for Fall 2014

 Chronicling America's Wars

Some of world's most celebrated war correspondents will be coming to the University of Oklahoma in Fall 2014. The Gaylord College will be offering a new dream course pairing two of the college's award-winning professors - Pulitzer Prize winner John Schmeltzer and Emmy award winner Mike Boettcher. Just as technological changes have transformed warfare, technology has changed how correspondents cover those conflicts. This course will provide a tour of America's wars with the assistance of speakers such as one of first POW female war correspondents, to Dan Rather who brought the Vietnam War home to America's living rooms and New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks, who helped carry the body of Oklahoma City native Anthony Shadid out of Syria.

Students take this financial aptitude test because it offers them access to Bloomberg's Talent Search database, where employers identify students with the specific competencies they're looking for.
