KSDK Internship Program in St. Louis
KSDK is looking for interns for Summer and Fall semesters in 2014.
Our program may be different than other stations in town. But our responsibility to each student, and our commitment, is different as well.
We highly encourage each intern to make a total commitment to the experience and stay through the conclusion of that semester's program. During the school year, we anticipate 20-25 hours will be spent at KSDK. We are also extremely flexible when it comes to a student's schedule. We work with each student to guarantee a quality experience, getting school work done and spending enough time here to understand the business.
Each intern has tasks in a variety of areas on all of our platforms. The areas include the assignment desk, the sports office, the special projects area of the newsroom, our websites, the community relations office, the "Show Me St. Louis" team and a host of other options. Students apply to the program only, not a specific area.
Additionally, time is given to observation so a student can concentrate on an area of interest and meet with leaders inside the station.
We believe interns should be put on the right path for a career, so we try to help them prepare for the job market. Since its establishment in 1985, the program has had more than 800 students. Many are happily employed in the business.
Currently, more than a dozen former interns are in full time and part time jobs here.
Students who are interested should send these documents in the mail, not online. Once the materials are received and the application packet is complete, the candidate should follow up with a phone call to set up an interview. Interviews will be given only to students who have sent in the materials.
Here are the materials we require: 1. A letter explaining why a KSDK internship is of interest 2. An official college transcript sent directly to Ava Ehrlich 3. A resume 4. Broadcast writing samples, work from a journalism class, or a class research paper. 5. A letter of recommendation from a broadcast professional, someone currently working in the broadcast industry.
None of these materials can be returned. Do not send tapes or DVDs.
An intern must receive academic credit and furnish a personal letter from a faculty advisor explaining the arrangement before the semester's work may begin.
Since each institution is different, we really have no requirement regarding college standing, except that a candidate must have finished at least one year in college.
The experience is unpaid, but we do offer a chance to work in one of the most exciting and successful network affiliates in the country, in a corporation that leads the nation in newsgathering and its commitment to its community and employees.
A student who is interested should send all materials, then follow up with a phone call to set up an interview immediately. Interviews will be held at 3:00 p.m. on March 5, 14, 21, 28 and April 4. All applications need to be in by April 1, 2014.
Materials should be sent to: Ava Ehrlich Senior Executive Content Producer KSDK 1000 Market St. Louis, MO 63101
Call Ava Ehrlich any time with questions at 314-444-5120 or e-mail atinterninfo@ksdk.com.
