Five students from Leslie Cermak's JMC 2033 lab won the fall 2013 AP Stylebook Jeopardy Championship. The winning students are Alexis Trammell, Greg Spinner, Hayoon Song, Joseph Noble and Kristy Truong.

Every semester, students in the required Writing for Mass Media class learn Associated Press style by competing to become lab champions in a Jeopardy-like game. The winning lab teams then compete in semifinals and a final round in the 2033 lecture, taught by Judy Gibbs Robinson.

PW Senior Gets Dow Jones Internship:

Professional writing senior Dillon Phillips has been chosen for the prestigious Dow Jones News Fund copyediting internship program. Dillon will spend the summer editing sports copy at the Philadelphia Inquirer after attending an intensive editing workshop at the University of Nebraska.

Dillon and eight other Gaylord students took an editing test in October as

part of the application process. Other recent Dow Jones interns from

Gaylord include Bryan Dugan (San Luis Obispo Observer, 2012), Renee Selanders (Indianapolis Star, 2011), Nicole Hill (Austin American Statesman, 2011) and Chris Lusk (Dallas Morning News, 2011). Gaylord faculty has at least two alums of the program: journalism instructors Warren Vieth and

Ad Students Present their Work on Southwest Airlines
Jacob Brescherer, Emma Hunsaker, and Courtney Parmalee, were chosen by the advertising agency, VML in Kansas City, to present their work on Southwest Airlines.  These Gaylord College students were chosen from the account planning class, travelled to Kansas City and discussed their work on Friday, December 6.  They presented the strategy development project which included secondary research, a competitive review, store checks, professional detective interviews, consumer/user interviews, focus groups, ethnography, mini-sagas, a consumer journey, study of Influencers, a benefits matrix, an opportunity index, maps, and a SWOT analysis.

Competition was tough.  Jeremy Franklin, a Gaylord grad and VML strategic planner, said it was hard to make a decision, "all the work had merit."
