New Business and Energy Journalism
Course Offered
| |

Richard Weiss, a St. Louis-based writer, editor and entrepreneur, will join the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communications in January, bringing with him an emphasis on business journalism. He will teach two classes: a new course, Business and Energy Reporting, and the college's Capitol Bureau Reporting class.
Both classes will include a focus on business, economic and policy issues related to energy, an abundant Oklahoma natural resource that has spawned several influential state industries.
Weiss has a broad experience in the field as a writer, editor, trainer, and entrepreneur. He worked for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for 30 years, where he pioneered narrative writing and led a series of National Writers' Workshops that brought the best and brightest practitioners to the Midwest.
Weiss writes about the Business and Energy class: Once considered a pipe dream, many experts believe that the U.S. stands at the cusp of achieving energy independence. Getting there will require changes certain to have a significant impact on everyone -- maybe even more so for Oklahomans. This course will provide students with:
- A keen understanding of the energy business, particularly in regard to how it functions in Oklahoma;
- An appreciation of the tradeoffs involved in encouraging oil exploration/production and its impact on the economy and the environment.
- An exploration into ways of producing compelling stories about these tradeoffs on a variety of media platforms - in print, online, on television, on the radio.
Students will work with and learn from investigative reporters and storytellers who cover the energy industry with the ultimate goal of producing a masterwork worthy of presentation to a mass audience.
Questions about the classes should be directed to Dr. Peter Gade, journalism area head, or journalism academic adviser Erin Simonton.
