Eight broadcasting students and three faculty represented Gaylord College at the 2013 OETA Student Day in Oklahoma City.  Broadcast students and faculty from colleges across the state meet every October at Oklahoma's Public Television facility.  The event is produced by faculty from the Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association and the staff at OETA.  Gaylord College faculty member Ken Fischer is OBEA's Vice-President for 2013-2014 and coordinated the day's panel sessions with the help of colleagues Kathy Johnson, Bob Dickey, Mike Boettcher, Brent Weber, Kenny Mossman and Rick Allen Lippert.

Boettcher's session entitled "War Reporting" was the morning's keynote speaker.  The long-time international correspondent spoke solo with the group of more than 125 students and faculty.  He share clips from his upcoming documentary, "The Hornet's Nest."  Later in the morning, graduate student Brent Weber moderated a sports panel called "The Exploding Sports Media Landscape."  OU Senior Associate Athletics Director and Gaylord adjunct instructor Kenny Mossman shared his insights as a member of the panel.   In the afternoon Fischer moderated a panel called "Self-Branding, Free-Lancing and the Search for Work."  Gaylord adjunct instructor Rick Allen Lippert discussed what free-lancers need to know about running their self-employed businesses.  OUTV News Director Bob Dickey also attended.

The faculty were joined by seven undergraduate students from the Broadcast Journalism and BEM majors.  The students included Carter Baum, Kenzie Clark, Britni Harris, Lauren Nevitt, Sydney Stavinoha, Madeline Stebbins and Ross Stracke.  Perhaps the day's highlight was at the end when Madeline Stebbins was awarded one of four OETA scholarships.  Stebbins went through an interview process earlier in the day.  The scholarships are competitive against more than 15 colleges in the state.  Stebbins took home a $1000 Gene Dillehay Scholarship.  This is the first OETA scholarship won by a Gaylord College student in several years.                                                                                             Return to Top

New Business and Energy Journalism Course Offered

Richard Weissa St. Louis-based writer, editor and entrepreneur, will join the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communications in January, bringing with him an emphasis on business journalism. He will teach two classes: a new course, Business and Energy Reporting, and the college's Capitol Bureau Reporting class.

Both classes will include a focus on business, economic and policy issues related to energy, an abundant Oklahoma natural resource that has spawned several influential state industries.

Weiss has a broad experience in the field as a writer, editor, trainer, and entrepreneur. He worked for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for 30 years, where he pioneered narrative writing and led a series of National Writers' Workshops that brought the best and brightest practitioners to the Midwest.

Weiss writes about the Business and Energy class: Once considered a pipe dream, many experts believe that the U.S. stands at the cusp of achieving energy independence. Getting there will require changes certain to have a significant impact on everyone -- maybe even more so for Oklahomans. This course will provide students with:

  • A keen understanding of the energy business, particularly in regard to how it functions in Oklahoma;
  • An appreciation of the tradeoffs involved in encouraging oil exploration/production and its impact on the economy and the environment.
  • An exploration into ways of producing compelling stories about these tradeoffs on a variety of media platforms - in print, online, on television, on the radio.

Students will work with and learn from investigative reporters and storytellers who cover the energy industry with the ultimate goal of producing a masterwork worthy of presentation to a mass audience.

Questions about the classes should be directed to Dr. Peter Gade, journalism area head, or journalism academic adviser Erin Simonton

  Mary Kay CosmeticsThe National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) team is seeking applicants for the spring competition team. NSAC is the premier student advertising competition in the country with over 150 schools participating. If successful at districts students advance to nationals where they receive an expense paid trip to compete against district finalists at the American Advertising Federation's convention in Boca Raton, Florida this May. The competition provides great networking opportunities and many participants have moved on to top jobs in the industry.

This year's client is Mary Kay Cosmetics. We are seeking applicants for account planners/interactive strategists, research, graphic/interactive designers, copywriters, cinematographers, and media.  You are welcome to apply for multiple positions but please make sure the work you submit reflects your area of interest.
