Steven Thorn, MPW, publishes second novel
| |
Steven Thorn, Masters of Professional Writing student, published his second fantasy novel, The Undying Fire, on Kindle and paperback through Amazon.com. This book is a sequel to his first fantasy novel, The Phoenix Guardian, which he published as a junior.
" After the traumatic events on Mithris, Natalie Bliss struggles to recover her memory and power. She returns to Arcadia, the planet of the gods, to reunite with the Phoenix Guardians.
Natalie's peaceful homecoming is ruined by the alarming behavior of her golem housekeeper, Florentina. Obsessed with tales of the legendary Golem Army of Calypso, Florentina sends Natalie and her friends on a dangerous quest to find the army.
But they're not the only ones looking for this powerful force. A mysterious enemy is planning an attack on the capital city of Calypso, which is about to host the famous Arcadian Games.
Natalie's worries intensify when something precious is stolen from her-a theft that could endanger not just her life, but her soul.
The seconds are counting down to the beginning of the Arcadian Games. Time is running out for Natalie and her friends to save the city from a monstrous threat.
But even if Natalie can save Calypso, it may be too late to save herself."

New Business Journalism course offered
| |
Richard Weiss, a St. Louis-based writer, editor and entrepreneur, will join the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communications in January, bringing with him an emphasis on business journalism. He will teach two classes: a new course, Business and Energy Reporting, and the college's Capitol Bureau Reporting class.
Both classes will include a focus on business, economic and policy issues related to energy, an abundant Oklahoma natural resource that has spawned several influential state industries.
Weiss has a broad experience in the field as a writer, editor, trainer, and entrepreneur. He worked for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for 30 years, where he pioneered narrative writing and led a series of National Writers' Workshops that brought the best and brightest practitioners to the Midwest.
Weiss writes about the Business and Energy class: Once considered a pipe dream, many experts believe that the U.S. stands at the cusp of achieving energy independence. Getting there will require changes certain to have a significant impact on everyone -- maybe even more so for Oklahomans. This course will provide students with:
- A keen understanding of the energy business, particularly in regard to how it functions in Oklahoma;
- An appreciation of the tradeoffs involved in encouraging oil exploration/production and its impact on the economy and the environment.
- An exploration into ways of producing compelling stories about these tradeoffs on a variety of media platforms - in print, online, on television, on the radio.
Students will work with and learn from investigative reporters and storytellers who cover the energy industry with the ultimate goal of producing a masterwork worthy of presentation to a mass audience.
Questions about the classes should be directed to Dr. Peter Gade, journalism area head, or journalism academic adviser Erin Simonton.
