SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards Announced
  
NEWSPAPERS
     The Oklahoma Daily
was named as the Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper for the Region 8 SPJ Mark of Excellence Awards and is one of the top three college newspapers in the country, according to judges for the National SPJ Mark of Excellence contest. 
     The Daily is one of two national finalists (runners-up) in the category of Best All-Around Daily Student Newspaper in the 2012 Mark of Excellence competition. The winner was the Daily Reveille at Louisiana State University. The other finalist was the Indiana Daily Student.
    The contest covered the 2012 calendar year, when Gaylord College alum Chris Lusk (2012, journalism) and senior Laney Ellisor (professional writing) were editors, Lusk in the spring and Ellisor in the fall. In addition, Chase Cook, a December 2012 grad and reporter for Oklahoma Watch, received second place for an in-depth report on sexual assault on campus.

BROADCAST
The broadcast journalism and BEM students received six first place awards and three second place awards for work on KGOU, OOU Nightly and Routes TV in the Region 8 competition.

New Stylebook Champions Crowned
    The spring 2013 Writing for Mass Media class (JMC 2033) has crowned a new team of AP Stylebook Jeopardy Champions.
    Winners of the semester-long tournament, from Lab 18, coached by Carol Cole-Frowe are: Traci Kern, Kelly Rogers, Cameron Smith, Yuanxin Zhao, and Abbi Melrose.
    The AP Stylebook Jeopardy tournament is intended to make it easier and more interesting for students to learn Associated Press style, which is used by most news and public relations organizations.
   Students in the large, entry-level class first compete in three Jeopardy rounds in their lab sections. Scores are added up until each lab crowns a team of AP Stylebook champions. Lab champions then compete during lecture in semifinal and final rounds.
Oklahoma Watch Nominated for Great Plains Award

     Congratulations to Oklahoma Watch and the following students for being named 2013 Great Plains Journalism Awards finalists: Katherine Borgerding, Graham Lee Brewer (MA graduate, 2009), Ron J. Jackson Jr., Darren Jaworski (grad student), and Juan Sanchez.  The awards ceremony and luncheon is scheduled for Friday, May 17, in Tulsa at the Mayo Hotel. Good luck to Oklahoma Watch!
 
 
 
Carter Brings Home the Gold
  carter   Gaylord College graduate student and author M. Scott Carter received an IPPY in the Independent Publisher Book Awards for the novel The Immortal Von B.  Carter brought home the gold medal for Young Adult Fiction.  Earlier this month the novel also received an Oklahoma Book Award. Check out Carter's book here!

* JMC 4970-141: Survey of Gaming and Interactive Media - 3 credit hour upper-level course being taught Monday-Friday for four weeks. The class is open to all undergraduate class levels and all majors, not just JMC. The course focuses on video games and interactive media as a whole in terms of societal, moral and technological impacts they have on contemporary society. The class is fun but it is also challenging and rewarding. The OU Daily published the this article with more information.
 
* Introduction to Broadcast Journalims - Sign up for the SUMMER version of this broadcast CORE course (also can be taken as an elective). Get ahead of the game! Take the course in a month and free up your schedule for next semester!
 
* JMC 3353 Advertising Copy and Layout - It is a required course for advertising majors. Taking it in the summer opens up your regular semester for more elective course work. Times: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. MTWR. Dates: June 10 through July 5 with a July 4 holiday. See Professor Tarpenning or adviser Monica Varley in Student Services. (It's also open to PR majors and counts as a JMC elective.)
 
* JMC 4970/5970: Media Relations - Jumpstart your career by learning what it takes to build successful relationships with the media! Understand how to handle a variety of media interview settings through practical, hands-on exercises. But don't take my word for it! the class will start on June 10 and end July 5. It is taught by Professor Bob Pritchard from 1 p.m. to 3:10 p.m..

Discover Oklahoma - 

AAA's Discover Oklahoma, a weekly program produced by the Oklahoma Department of Tourism has internship opportunities in the Oklahoma City office for the summer.

     The program is dedicated to the promotion of Oklahoma tourism by featuring people, destinations and attractions throughout the state.

     AAA's  Discover Oklahoma is broadcast every Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in four major television markets; KWTV Channel 9 in Oklahoma City, KOTV Channel 6 in Tulsa, KSWO Channel 7 in Lawton, and digitally via KXII Channel 12.2 at 6:00 p.m. in Sherman, TX and KCTU in Wichita, Kansas. Cox Cable also airs the show multiple times a week on their cable system covering the entire state.

     Selected interns can expect training and gather experience in the following areas: transcribing interviews, video photography, non-linear editing, producing stories, writing feature stories for television, lighting and more.

Student Employee - Marketing Assistant

- This position is a hybrid position, which will provide valuable experience in graphic design, marketing, public relations, writing and proofreading.

- Assist with marketing and promotional projects in various departments.

- Conceptualizes, edits and helps produce brochures, forms, web content, posters, advertisements, and other marketing materials for various departments.

- Helps manage department branding standards.

 

Applicants must be enrolled in the upcoming fall semester and have a current student status over the summer. Must be studying marketing, public relations, journalism, English or a related area at the University of Oklahoma. Hours per week: 15-20. Salary range: $7.50-$8.50 per hour.

Summer Internship Available in OKC

TSET (Oklahoma Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust), a constitutional endowment trust committed to improving the health of all Oklahomans, was created by an overwhelming majority vote of the people in 2000.  TSET makes a substantial impact in the lives of Oklahomans through research, community grants and statewide initiatives, including the Oklahoma Tobacco Helpline (1-800-QUIT-NOW).  Funding from TSET will be available to create better lives through better health for generations to come. 

Purpose:
TSET is seeking a communications intern to assist with writing, producing internal and external publications. The communications intern will also assist in outreach and public relations within government and community sector. Interns will receive hands-on, real-world experience as they team up with TSET staff on projects such as: public relations and media campaigns, project planning, research and fact gathering, and other activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Write press releases regarding organization's activities and events.
  • Coordinate and implement projects and publications to increase organization awareness.
  • Cultivate data and help develop presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Assist with social media and website plans and strategies.
  • Assist in writing and editing periodic communications about grant projects funded by TSET.
  • Help with coordination and implementation of special projects.
  • Write copy for agency collateral materials including brochures, flyers and programs.
  • Assist in preparing and documenting outreach efforts for TSET's incentive grant programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Requirements:

  • Major in public relations, journalism, advertising, marketing or communications.
  • Strong writing and editing skills. Photography skills are helpful.
  • Organized and detail oriented with a proven ability to complete multiple assignments on deadline.
  • Self-motivated and able to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of desktop publishing software (Adobe Creative Suite) a plus.
  • Basic knowledge of website content management systems.
  • Friendly, professional and team-oriented personality.

    fiox  KOKI-FOX23, a Cox Media Group station in Tulsa, OK is seeking a creative, self-motivated individual to join our lifestyle magazine show. If you have enthusiasm for crafting segments and creative writing we are looking for you.

 

Responsibilities

The individual in this position reports to the Executive Producer of Great Day Green Country, and is responsible for planning, writing and producing for the one-hour program (M-F).

* Work effectively and efficiently with host, clients, guest and photographer to create compelling content and visual segments that communicate the viewer benefit.

* Coordinate and schedule clients shoot dates and in-studio pre-shoots to accommodate their schedule and production schedule

* Book guests for live interviews

* Write daily copy for social media content to promote the show

* Write daily topical promos

 

Qualifications

* Must be an excellent writer and communicator.

* Must work cooperatively with others.

* Must work well under pressure to meet daily deadlines.

* A minimum of 1 year experience producing news or similar type program preferred.
