| Students Give Back to the Community |
Five members of Gaylord College's Professional Writing Student Association participated in the Big Event, Saturday, where over 5,000 participants completed over 20,000 hours of community service in one day.
PWSA volunteers went to a neighborhood in Oklahoma City to help three neighbors pick up trash along the side of the road and clear an area where someone had illegally dumped trash. By moving mattresses, tiles, broken windows, a couch, bagging old diapers and piling these and other items close to the curb, the City of Oklahoma City can be summoned to haul it off.
"It was humbling to see our students work so hard alongside residents of the neighborhood," said Adjunct Instructor, Jocelyn Pedersen, who is filling in as advisor to PWSA while Professor Deborah Chester is on sabbatical. "They worked tirelessly for hours. Our sense of accomplishment at the end was amazing, and we made new friends in Miss Helen and Miss Ernestine."
Shelby Edwards, PWSA president, said she hopes to make participating in the Big Event an annual tradition.
Gaylord College would like to give a big shout out to all of our students who participated in OU's official day of community service. Thanks for making a difference in the community! To learn more about the Big Event or to sign up next year, visit http://bigevent.ou.edu.

| Graduate Student Wins Oklahoma Book Award |
The 24th Annual Oklahoma Book Awards program was held Saturday, April 13. The awards recognize books written the previous year by Oklahomans or about Oklahoma. Of the 121 books entered in the competition, 35 were selected as finalists including Gaylord College's own M. Scott Carter. Carter won in the Young Adult category for his book, "The Immortal Von B." Carter's sophomore novel is a book about love according to its author-a love for music and culture, a love letter to Ludwig von Beethoven, and a love story about a boy and a girl. At its heart lies the question, "Can a teenage girl from this century find happiness with a young composer from another?" Josie Brunswick is about to find out the answer to that question after she moves to Europe with her father so he can head up a new secret world genetics lab. Carter's first novel, the critically-acclaimed Stealing Kevin's Heart, was also an Oklahoma Book Award finalist. He is an investigative political reporter for The Journal Record and lives in Oklahoma City with his family.
