The Children's Center Communications Dept.
The Children's Center, a nonprofit hospital serving children with complex medical and physical disabilities, offers unpaid internships to qualified college juniors and seniors seeking a career in communications (public relations). Internships should be for academic credit and coordinated through an accredited institution of higher learning and The Children's Center communications department, in accordance with policies and procedures of the Center's human resources department. All interns are subject to the applicable employee standards of the Center, including code of conduct and dress code policies.
Objectives
An intern in the Communications department will be provided an opportunity for practical experience and direct knowledge in an on-the-job situation; to provide an opportunity for the student to work with professionals and receive professional guidance; and to provide the student with a means of exploring vocational interest on a short-term basis. Exposure and/or opportunities will include pitching stories to local/regional print and broadcast journalists, preparing newsletters and social media announcements, and writing and/or editing stories for print and video materials. An intern will be considered as an ambassador of the Center and may be required to represent the hospital by giving tours, making presentations or assisting with fundraising events. The intern's supervisor will be the director of communications who will evaluate the student's performance in accordance with the requirements of the student's institution of higher learning. An intern should be comfortable working in an environment which includes children with various medical and rehabilitative issues.
Requirements
The Children's Center offers internships during fall, spring and summer sessions.
Length of internships may vary, depending on the requirements of the college or university. A brief training session about the hospital's mission and services is required, as well as the completion of signed agreements including student observation forms, privacy policies (HIPPA), and department-related confidentiality of intellectual property that may be observed during the course of the internship. If it is determined that the student is not adequately fulfilling terms or requirements of the Center, the internship may be terminated without notice, subjecting the intern to a loss of college credit, as determined by the institution of higher learning.
Application Procedures:
Candidates must complete an application form and submit it along with a cover letter and resume. A short writing, video or portfolio example is encouraged. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. KSDK - St. Louis, Missouri KSDK is looking for interns for both Summer and Fall 2013. If you're interested in learning about the news industry and gaining hands on experience in one of the top news stations in St. Louis, we invite you to apply to our internship program. Our program may be different than other stations in town. But our responsibility to each student, and our commitment, is different as well. We highly encourage each intern to make a total commitment to the experience and stay through the conclusion of that semester's program. During the school year, we anticipate 20-25 hours weekly at KSDK. We are also extremely flexible when it comes to a student's schedule. We work with each student to make sure that student is having a quality experience, getting school work done and spending enough time here to understand the business. Each intern will have tasks in a variety of areas on all of our platforms. The areas include the assignment desk, the sports office, the special projects area of the newsroom, our websites, the community relations office, the "Show Me St. Louis" team and a host of other options. Students apply to the program only, not a specific area. Additionally, time is given to observation so a student can concentrate on an area of interest and meet with leaders inside the station. An intern must receive academic credit and furnish a personal letter from a faculty advisor explaining the arrangement before the semester's work may begin. The experience is unpaid, but we do offer a chance to work in one of the most exciting and successful network affiliates in the country, in a corporation that leads the nation in newsgathering and its commitment to its community and employees. Interested students should send all materials, and then follow up with a phone call to set up an interview immediately. Interviews will be 3:00 p.m. for summer and fall programs on one of the following dates: March 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29. If the need is great enough we will add an interview on April 5. All materials must be in by April 5. To see full requirements, go to the KSDK website.
