Chicago

Jim Avery will take students to visit advertising agencies in Chicago. We will leave on Feb. 6 and return on Feb. 10.  If you have interest, please let Jim Avery (javery@ou.edu) and Clair Mathison  <cmmathison@ou.edu> know. The cost will be about $150 plus airfare. Jim Avery can forward you a syllabus if you want to know more.

While the schedule is not complete, it is likely that we will visit DDB, Euro RSCG, DraftFCB, Sponge, Ketchum, Digitas, and Vivaki.

Spring Break San Francisco Advertising Trip

Students interested in visiting advertising agencies in San Francisco, please contact Professor Tarpenning (dtarpenning@ou.edu) as quickly as possible. We plan to fly into the City by the Bay on Wednesday, March 20, visit one agency that afternoon, stay in the Hotel Rex (within walking distance of most of the agencies we'd visit) or Hotel Carlton (not so close), have an alumni party on Thursday night, visit agencies Friday....leaving Saturday and Sunday free for touring.

We will fly out Sunday, March 24 in time to be in class on Monday morning. We plan to visit Goodby Silverstein, Eleven, Draftfcb, Venables Bell, Publicis/Hal Riney, BBDO West, DDB and possibly Butler/Shine and Stern, recently named one of Forbes Magazine's top 10 advertising agencies. It will be our first visit to the West Coast in several years and will open up some new employment possibilities through our networking.

Let me know ASAP. We need to coordinate with the travel agency so they can help plan the transportation and lodging. Cost will probably be around $750-800 for the entire stay, based on quadruple hotel occupancy.

Spend the month of July in Arezzo, Italy. An ancient yet vibrant town nestled in the hills of Tuscany, Arezzo offers easy access to cultural and economic centers such as Florence, Rome, and Siena.

These bustling cities are close enough to visit in a day yet far enough away to preserve Arezzo's Tuscan ambiance.

Arezzo and the surrounding area is the birthplace of renown artists, poets and musicians such as Michelangelo, Petrarch, and Guido Monaco.

FULL-TIME POSITION AT THE NORMAN TRANSCRIPT
Copy editor/page designer

The Norman Transcript operates a universal copy desk, meaning all copy editors/page designers are cross trained to handle local/wire news copy and sports copy. There are essentially three components to the job: page design, advance and on deadline; copy editing, including reading for spelling, grammar and content; and solid news judgment ranging from local to wire to sports.

Page Design: These skills include an eye for graphic design and a thorough understanding of Quark and/or InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator. Demonstrated skill and proficiency, and the ability to learn and adapt quickly are necessary.

Copy Editing:  Must demonstrate strong vocabulary and grammar skills.  Must be a strong headline writer who knows when to play it straight and when to be clever and then knows how to be clever while playing it straight. Finally, the successful candidate must be able to read copy and spot holes, large and small, and  recognize, then fix, the problems that could embarrass the paper.

News judgment: Must be able to read and edit all local, news wire and sports wire and local sports copy. Must be adept at following national and international news and have an understanding of sports. Must be able to take the best of the available copy and fill our wire news space. Must be able to distill the news/sports into concise stories of modest length and briefs.

Must be able to work well under deadline pressure, producing several pages each work shift. Deadlines are not suggestions, they are expectations.

Copy editor/page designers generally work a 3 p.m. to midnight shift, with limited variation in hours. They work 40-hour weeks and generally receive two consecutive days off, though not necessarily traditional weekend days.

Email a resume, cover letter and work samples to: Debra A. Parker, editor; The Norman Transcript at dparker@normantranscript.com

The post is immediately available and we hope to fill it as soon as possible.
