Botanys Breath
Botany's Breath: July 10-13
The Conservatory is in full swing this summer! We're humming with delighted visitors, busy butterflies, exotic plants in full bloom, and lots of great things happening in the next few weeks...

We'd love to see you at any or all of these special events:

- Saturday, June 22, 10am to noon: What's the Buzz? - Celebrate National Pollinator Week with FREE butterfly-oriented family activities.

- Wednesday, July 10 - Saturday, July 13: Botany's Breath - Two performances nightly. The Conservatory acts as both muse and stage in this performance and walking exploration led by dancers and musicians.

- Saturday, July 13, 10am to noon: Butterfly-Attracting Container Workshop for Families - Container, soil and plants provided. Make a butterfly-attracting planter with your kids, and enjoy some Butterflies & Blooms right in your own backyard!

- Wednesday, July 31, 6:00 - 8:00pm: DIY Planters from Keepsakes or Salvaged Items - Give new life to that old typewriter, cowboy boot, or antique tea tin! Bring in one item you'd like to use as a planter; we'll provide the soil and plants.

All of the ticketed events above feature member discounts. As always, we greatly appreciate and thank you for your support of the Conservatory of Flowers. Hope to see you soon!

Little girl at Butterflies & Blooms
Draw butterflies into your own backyard!

Bring the kids and get ready to get your hands dirty, at this afternoon planting workshop led by garden designer Jennie Strobel of Sloat Garden Centers. Participants will leave with a beautiful container filled with butterfly-attracting plants such as cosmos, lavender, sage, zinnias and/or daisies (no guarantee on availability of specific plants; plants will be selected by Sloat Garden Center on the day of the event).

Sloat will provide the containers, plants and soil for this kid-friendly workshop, and Jennie will be here to guide us and give us tips on how to draw butterflies to our planters. Tickets include admission to the Conservatory of Flowers, including our Butterflies & Blooms special exhibit!

Botany's Breath

In less than a month, the Conservatory and Kim Epifano's Epiphany Productions Sonic Dance Theater will present Botany's Breath, a site-specific contemporary dance work with live music and video.

Using the Conservatory's unique tropical galleries as their inspiration, stage, and even as projection screens, the performers will lead the audience on a walking journey through the rooms of the Conservatory, and out into our surrounding grounds, in an exploration of the spiritual, symbiotic relationship between plants and humans.

Experience the Conservatory in a new and transforming way. Don't miss this ambitious and exhilarating performance!
What's in Bloom?  Epiphyllum
Epiphyllum
Epiphyllum, or orchid cactus

This impressive bloom is the flower of an Epiphyllum cactus, and may be found in our Potted Plants Gallery near the North side gift shop entrance.

Orchid cacti are epiphytic, meaning they attach to and grow on other plants without parasitically feeding on or deriving nutrients from their host plants. Epiphyllum usually root in patches of moss or debris that collect on branches. They are native to Central and South America.

Check our What's in Bloom page to see what else is blooming!

Liam Frank, Born May 2, 2013

Welcome, Liam Frank!

Huge congratulations from all of us to Erika Frank, our Director of Volunteers and Education, on the birth of her beautiful son!! Erika writes:

"Liam Joseph Frank arrived on May 2nd weighing 6 pounds,15 ounces. He's gaining weight and sleeping like a champ, without the aid of a baby swing (YET).

His sister Lily has been excited about having a baby around, but still can't get his name, so she just calls him "DaDa". He does kind of look like his DaDa, so it'll do for now."
