Carey's Conversations

"O Holy Spirit, whose presence is liberty, grant us that freedom of the Spirit which will not fear to tread in unknown ways, nor be held back by misgivings of ourselves and fear of others. Ever beckon us forward to the place of thy will which is also the place of thy power, O ever-leading, ever-loving Lord. Amen."

George Appleton, from The Oxford Book of Prayer, p.92

A number of weeks ago I received a phone call from our bishop. Now when a bishop calls a priest on the phone there can be a sudden rise in the priest's blood pressure, "What did I do, am I in trouble?" I was greatly relieved to hear Bishop Benfield ask me if I could use a little help from another priest. It was a no-brainer and I immediately answered 'yes!'

From the Organ Bench

Many thanks to the St. Luke's choir and handbell ensembles for their tremendous work at each of the Holy Week services and on Easter Sunday.  The Holy Triduum and Easter are the both the highest holy days of the liturgical year and also the most exhausting for church musicians and clergy alike.  The services are lengthier and more complex than weekly liturgies and require much more special music than typical Sundays. Few may realize that preparation for the Triduum begins immediately after Christmas with the drafting of music lists and the reading of new music.  These giant repertoire lists are worked through in addition to the regular repertoire preparation for services each week by our singers and bell musicians.

We will have a prepared lunch for the Bishop after the 10:30 service. A donation of $5 a person is suggested. If you plan on attending we would like everyone to RSVP to the office so we have enough food for all. We will have a sign up starting Sunday in the Narthex for desserts.

Icons in Transformation

Icons in Transformation is an exhibit of icons filling the church and the parish hall of St. Mark's by Russian artist, Ludmila Pawlowska. Ms. Pawlowska's art includes both traditional Russian icons and contemporary art inspired by traditional icon-painting techniques. St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Little Rock will host this exhibit through August 17. Carey and I had a sneak preview this week. It is breath taking. It is an exhibit that you will want to spend some time looking at and praying with.

An icon is painted as act of worship, a doorway to the divine. It is theology written in paint.

Thank you everyone who participated in the Youth Sunday service! It is always a joy to witness the presence of St. Luke's youth community and I am so proud of their work. Olivia Goza is heading to California!

Olivia Goza has been such a wonderful example to our youth over the last three years and it will sadden us to see her go. She will be taking a job at Camp Stevens in California this summer and will continue on there in the fall. Her last day as youth minister at St. Luke's will be Sunday, May 25th. Come and wish her well as we send her out as a missionary from St. Luke's!
