"For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Luke 12.34

Today I am still basking in the sounds of the beautiful music we heard this past Sunday evening at St. Luke's! Duo Arte' (concert with two pianists and grand pianos) blessed us with world-class virtuosity and all because of the generosity of St. Luke's parishioners.

One of the conversations I had that evening encapsulates the heart of what stewardship is about. They commented that they were, "so grateful that some people years ago saw the potential of our worship space. Without them none of this would have been possible." Because of the forethought, vision, time, talent and treasure of these parishioners we enjoy a wonderful space for worship and for the concerts by amazing performers! We are the beneficiaries of their generosity. Blessings like these don't just happen automatically - they require commitment to be good stewards on the part of every parishioner.

It is now our joy and privilege to take up the work started by those who have come before us. The work of stewardship is for us in 2013-14 to fully fund and utilize what their sacrifices have made possible. We have plenty of educational space, and worship space in the nave and chapel. We have contemplative space with our labyrinth and burial space in our columbarium. We have added ministries in outreach like St. Francis House Vet's Dinners, Festival of the Senses concert series, we are reviving ministries that had fallen by the wayside and new ministries have been raised up as new people have brought new gifts and added them to existing ministries. Youth and children are learning about Christ the Good Shepherd on Sunday mornings. We're adding a new sexton to our staff in December to help us keep this place looking clean and inviting.

So many have done so much this past year to make St. Luke's the inviting congregation that it is. There is so much we are already doing but there is still more that is left undone. There are over 30 households that did not make a pledge in the past year. Would you prayerfully consider participating this year in the growth of your church? Would you talk with your family around the dinner table and discuss ways you might cut back in order to pledge this year?

Our financial resources are not the only treasures we have to give but there is also the gift of our talents and time. Practically every ministry in this parish could use the unique combination of gifts only you can bring. What treasure is the Spirit leading you to share? Could you find a couple of more hours a week to serve and support the ministries here?

It has been said that you get back what you put into a given activity or organization; but the church is the only place where there is a guaranteed return on your investment. God calls each of us to bring our hearts home - home to his kingdom - home to his church. With your vision, gifts and talents no telling what the Spirit can do through us here at St. Luke's!

Every blessing in Christ,

Fr. Carey+

Enough: Discovering Joy through Simplicity and Generosity Adam Hamilton

Money has great power in our lives and, when used wisely, helps us meet our goals, provide for our needs, and fulfill our life purpose. But in recent years, many of us ignored this when managing and spending our money. We found ourselves spending tomorrow's money today. The result of all of this was not greater happiness but greater stress and anxiety.

Enough is an invitation to rediscover the Bible's wisdom on prudent financial practices. Find the keys to experiencing contentment, overcoming fear, and discovering joy through simplicity and generosity.

From the Senior Warden

After reflecting on the last several weeks again I am so thankful to be attending St. Luke's. We have had two outstanding musical performances. One was by Jason Pennington reminding us what a fantastic organ we have and are very lucking to have someone to show it off.  Last Sunday evening Tatiana Roitman and Kristina Marinova of Duo Arete wowed those attending a St. Luke's Festival of the Senses performance. Earlier that day Father Carey Stone gave us much to think about with his sermon on All Saints Sunday. And this coming weekend we will have three of our youth attending Happening, and two youth working on the Happening Staff.

What a great place to worship.

From the Youth Minister

This semester the Senior High Youth have met on Sunday mornings for discussions centered on faith and ways it might apply to everyday "teenage" life. During the month of October we examined creative ways of experiencing God in our day-to-day lives, together coming up with 31 words to meditate on for each day of the month. Last Sunday, our class was fortunate to have Father Carey join us for a discussion over All Saints Day. We discussed influences of well-known saints, but also shared personal examples of "saint like" individuals that have helped shape us. As the month of November continues we will discuss the theme of "Thanks" and different ways of expressing it.

Outside of Sunday school, the fall semester offers a couple of weekends of Diocesan events for the youth. In September four of St. Luke's Senior High youth and Olivia attended the Arkansas Youth Event (AYE) at Camp Mitchell. There one of St. Luke's own, Amelia Mackey was elected to serve as a part of the Diocesan Youth Commission. It is so exciting that our church is becoming more recognized among the youth circle and we are so lucky to have such mature and promising youth represent St. Luke's!

Budget Update

October was a tough month on our cash budget.  We had approximately 11,000 more cash going out in expenses than we received due to some large quarterly bills that came due and because our pledge income was down last month.

Overall, the balance in  operating checking accounts is still up for the year and we have met all of our financial commitments, but our cash position has gotten tighter.  We ask that everyone keep up-to-date on their pledges so we can finish the year strong.
Thank you for your support of St. Luke's!

On-Going Events

  • 12 STEP EUCHARIST: The next one is Nov. 6th! The Eucharist on the first Wednesday of the month at noon at St. Luke's Episcopal Church 4106 JFK, will begin incorporating the 12 steps as well as the healing service in its liturgy. The service has been prepared by the Recovery Ministries of the Episcopal Church. It is a teaching liturgy showing us how the spirituality of the 12 steps is part of the liturgy of the Eucharist. For people in recovery, this liturgy may be important to see how each of the steps is present in the liturgy of the word and the table. For those not in involved in a 12 step program, the service will be an introduction to the spirituality of the 12 step program.

  • St. Luke's Labyrinth Guild hosts a community Labyrinth walk the first Tuesday of each month from 6 to 7 pm and the first Saturday from 9 to 11 am. This is a wonderful way to learn how to use this ancient and sacred meditative way of connecting to God.
