CAREY'S CONVERSATIONS

"Holy Spirit think through me till your ideas are my ideas."

Amy Carmichael

I had a conversation this week with a parishioner and during our time together I was reminded of the importance of spiritual reading. Spiritual reading is different than reading for knowledge. When we are seeking to gain knowledge we may read through material rather quickly and underline key concepts. With spiritual reading the goal is not to 'get through' or to 'master the material.' Rather than gaining knowledge about God we are seeking to have an experience with God. To do spiritual reading the pace slows and as you come across a word or phrase that captures your attention you pause and meditate on it, mulling it over in your mind while allowing these warm words to descend from your head down into your heart. By doing this we are feeding upon God in our hearts. As the energy recedes move on with your reading until some other word or phrases grabs you and repeat the process. Don't be alarmed if it takes thirty minutes to get through a couple pages.. Remember, the goal is not so much to gain knowledge as it is to make contact with the Spirit of God. As Lent approaches may we make time for spiritual reading.

On another note I have made three more appointments that I wanted to let you know about. Dan Dennis is the new Head Usher taking over for Rick Furr. For the Altar Guild we have two co-chairs, Wanda Dunwoody and Suzzette Patterson taking over for Lorene Means. I am grateful for those in our midst who are willing, able and capable of taking on new ministry opportunities.

Yours in Christ,

Carey+

DEACON'S BENCH

Wednesday night

Lent St. Luke's 2013

6 weeks

During Lent we will meet on Wednesday nights with evening prayer at 5:30, a simple meal at 6 and a program from 6:30 to 7.

On the first Wednesday, February 20, Jerusalem Greer will meet with adults and children and talk about keeping Lent at home.

Feb. 20 Jerusalem Greer keeping Lent at home

Have you ever noticed that we don't countdown the days until Easter's dawn the way we countdown the days until Christmas' arrival? Do you find yourself a bit lost at sea during the Lenten season, in that space of time between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday, struggling to find connections to the meaning of Lent for yourself and your family? You are not alone. Join us on February 20 for a family gathering here at St. Luke's, where author and craft artist Jerusalem Jackson Greer, will help each household create a unique and personal way to countdown the days of Lent to Easter, all the while connecting their story to God's story, one piece at a time.

The remainder of the Wednesday nights the children will be meeting with the youth and Ginna Simmons discussing Walking in Jesus' footsteps.

The adults will be listening to Adam Hamilton lead us through a walk with Jesus in his ministry and in his last week.

Adam Hamilton is the minister we listened to during our Advent series. The Rev. Adam Hamilton is a United Methodist minister who is the founding minister of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. The church began in a funeral home and has grown to 16,000 members, the largest in the Methodist denomination. The Rev. Hamilton delivered the sermon at the inaugural National Prayer Service in January at the Washington National Cathedral.

24 hours that Changed the World

We have 40 day meditation books available for $5 by Adam Hamilton which will enhance the material discussed on Wednesday nights.

WALKING THE MOURNER'S PATH

Spring 2013

April 4 to May 23

Thursday nights 6 to 8

St. Luke's Episcopal Church

4106 JFK North Little Rock

After the funeral and when friends and family go home often is when grief settles in. Walking the Mourner's Path is an 8 week grief group for anyone who has suffered a significant loss and would like to process it in a group setting. Walking the Mourner's Path is a Christ-centered bereavement support program. The purpose is to transform grief into joyful living by offering the outstretched hand of Christ during bereavement. Loss due to a death is always difficult. The support group invites those who have faced death and suffered the loss of a loved one to come into God's loving presence in community with others.

While the Mourner's Path is a non-denominational ministry, it is distinct from many other bereavement programs in that it is Christ-centered, scripturally and spiritually based. Walking the Mourner's Path is not group therapy but is spiritually directed. We believe grieving is not lack of faith but a natural part of living. Through the eight-week program, complete with workbook, mourners learn ways in which they may honor their loved ones, seek spiritual direction and discover God's promise of comfort in community. The fee is $80 for the class. Facilitators are Joanna Seibert, Phyllis Raney, and Anita Gwatney.

Contact person: Joanna Seibert 753 4281, [email protected] or visit Mourner's Path web site: www.mournerspath.com

Comments from previous participants:

"This program has been so beneficial.

I feel that I am in God's hands and that gives me comfort.

I cannot thank the church enough for sponsoring this program.

God blessed me when he led me to this program.

I will always be grateful to everyone involved."
