Trunk Show  & Demo ~ May 30, 12 to 5

Colleen Williams
Please join us on May 30th from 12 to 5 as we celebrate our
artTILE exhibit with a Saturday Studio by our special guest artist,
Colleen Williams. Colleen will present a Trunk Show of her latest works in porcelain and Demonstrate her skills & techniques throughout the day. we can't wait to see her tricks of the trade!

Colleen is a first-time exhibitor at indigenous creating a series of colorful, beautifully decorated, crisp box tiles with her signature floral patterns, with names like Lavender Mist, Turquoise Amaryllis, and
Yellow Chrysanthemum. Each tile stands on its own as a unique piece of art, but a trio or a larger grouping can make an impressive designer's statement.

~about Colleen Williams:
"I work with porcelain clay and have done so for about twenty years. It is white, smooth, delightful to push around between my fingers and it is robust when high-fired to maturity. My passion is to create colorful, patterned surfaces on forms that are intended for the wall as well as those that are intended for daily use and enjoyment. Having a fondness for foreign cultures, I often use symbolic imagery to subtly convey a sense of place.

I began playing with clay while apprenticing at a small architectural studio in Fort Lauderdale, FL. A friend's mother had the idea of reenergizing her pottery studio but needed help with the clean-up. In exchange for labor, I got the chance to "get my hands dirty" in a different way. I did what came naturally, mark-making in the clay on a horizontal plane, similar to the graphic notations on a blueprint. In short time, my surfaces were colorful, textural and completely patterned, though my creations were small...very small (jewelry pieces)...as I hadn't learned any forming methods!"

"I begin with a palette of colors that I've developed over the years: porcelain slips (liquid porcelain) and porcelain clay bodies. They both start out as white porcelain and when mixed with stains and oxides, various beautiful hues, tints and shades can be achieved with the addition of heat! I fire to a fairly high temperature of 2372F (cone 8), using electric kilns.

The decorative work starts after several layers of slip have been applied to a base: a hand-colored porcelain form (tile, vase, sculpture). The top layer is allowed to dry and a design is drawn onto its surface. Eventually, I retrace the design using shellac which will act as a resist when dry and reveal the layers beneath as the piece is etched using water and a damp sponge

Further embellishment is achieved with the application of underglazes and finished with a final gloss glaze, either in part to enhance just the raised design or the entire piece, often depending upon the piece's intended use. Each piece requires two to three firings to account for the surface design."

Please join us THIS Saturday for this grande event!
