Sue & Steve Vachon
ft.wayne, in
Creating beautiful, labor-intensive tiles is a labor of love for this couple! After bisque firing, Steve & Sue Vachon draw on each tile with wax. Each tile is then hand-glazed with color & fired to 1800 degrees. To achieve their hallmark look, this husband wife team carefully removes each tile, while still glowing HOT & places it in a container filled with sawdust. The sawdust ignites producing a smokey carbon-rich atmosphere which gives the tiles their smoldering black-ash color; while the rapid cooling creates the unique crackle patterning. By combining the tradition of hand-glazing with serendipity of raku, Steve & Sue's tiles are very rich, one-of-a-kind, & recognizable.

Gaby Tepper
pasadena, ca
After discovering the magic of getting lost in clay when she took her first ceramics class, Gaby Tepper couldn't get enough of it! She absolutely loves literally "drawing" into a clay slab! She carries her sketch book on her daily walks, quickly recording a variety of landscapes and views as she enjoys her morning ritual. She translates these sketches onto the tile form; adding the painterly glazes to enhance rich beauty of the fields, ocean, or mountains that are the backdrop of her neighborhood.

Cathy Kiffney
chapel hill, nc
Living in deep woods, just down the road from her mother's horse farm, Cathy Kiffney finds a daily opportunity to observe nature, the beauty & the beast. Images for her dimensional tiles are developed as she seeks out the mystery & beauty experienced by a walk in the woods, the quiet places & secret gardens. She endeavors to bring playfulness to her tiles & hopes to create a meaningful connection between her work, the viewer & nature.

Thomas & Sarah Gelsanliter
milan, mi
Drawing on the colors & patterns that surround their studio in southeastern Michigan, Sarah & Thomas Gelsanliter create handmade pottery & tiles. Both artists work on the pieces at different points in the process, allowing them to create finished work that neither could have achieved alone. Thomas draws and hand carves all of the designs used on the pieces hand-thrown by Sarah. Together they use a palette of luminous glazes to highlight the hand-carved designs and crisp lines, giving each piece a polished, radiant finish. Each piece is hand-crafted to be both beautiful and functional~ Enjoy.
