Greetings!
artTILE 2013 exhibit opens on Saturday, April 27!
We have HOT tile makers from last year along with 12 NEW art tile artists to join the ceramic celebrities for this year's show.
35 contemporary ceramic artists push the boundaries of a clay slab. Their clever creations challenge what we think of as "tile", while delighting and intriguing us with a variety of color & complexity!
artTILE 2013 features over ONE THOUSAND dynamic ceramic tiles ranging from low-relief 2-inch tiles to high-relief sculptural tiles; the common denominator, a slab of clay.
artTILE 2013 is an invitational exhibit featuring over 35 exceptional artists specially selected to display a wide range of designs, sizes, prices, and techniques offering a collection with great scope and depth. Hand-built, carved, pressed, stamped, molded, and one-of-a-kind tiles will be on view.
Styles range from whimsical and contemporary to the traditional aesthetics inherent to the arts and crafts movement. Imagery is also as diverse, from beautiful nature inspired motifs to thoughtfully rendered architectural landmarks to modern abstract graphics. artTILE 2013 delivers something for everyone.
This is an exhibit to experience! |

~amy meya ~kansas city, mo
Amy Meya loves the outdoors; even living in a city she enjoys watching the shapes of tree branches; observing flocks of birds swoop across the sky; collecting seed pods; & growing gourds & sunflowers in her yard. She synthesizes all these natural interests and expresses them through her work in clay. Amy believes that working within the tile format gives an expansive sensation & captures just a moment for her viewers. Her tiles send a message of her appreciation for the great outdoors and hope of conservation & stewardship of nature. |

~greg hicho ~milford, pa
After being a professional textile designer for companies such as Banana Republic and Ralph Lauren in New York, Greg Hicho went back to his fine arts roots in ceramics. His acute sense of detail & ability to capture the whimsy in daily chores are the hallmark of his tiles. All of his tiles are of his original designs with layers of stain, underglaze, and glaze to create the unique colors & interesting depth found in each earthenware tile. |

~patti mcquillin ~gig harbor, wa
A native of Washington, Patti McQuillin started creating ceramic tiles as a way to combine her lifelong interest in drawing & graphic design; the fun of "playing" with clay; her love of the beautiful Pacific Northwest; and her desire to make something lovely & useful. Some of her tiles are traditionally shaped while others are more organic, mimicing the object that was directly imprinted into the wet clay. Adding undulating colors, she gathers her inspiration from the trees, flowers, and sea creatures living on the shores of Puget Sound. (Her studio name came from a large crow stepping right into the wet clay of a tile she was making.) |

~ramona paloma tiles ~sierra madre, ca
Soozee Van Dyke Woods & Tracy Chamberlin are two friends making high-fired ceramic art tiles in a lovely nook of Sierra Madre. Finding inspiration in the rich colors & delightful activity in the world around them; they make each tile one at a time, laughing as they go & enjoying each beautifully imperfect, one-of-a-kind little work of art. They embrace the notion of seeing "the hand in the work" & are captivated by the infinite artistic possibilities working in clay offers them. Their tiles are enjoyable with clever creatures & whimsical designs~ add one or a group to your home for endless joy. |

~sondra alexander ~wichita, ks
Award winning, unique and beautifully sculpted 3D ceramic relief tiles; Sondra Alexander's images range from gorgeous wild cats & amusing monkeys to beloved bulldogs & cuddly cats. Each displays amazing detail and exquisite coloring. Growing up in the country with lots of animals, she began sketching these friends from a young age. Attention to capturing and honoring the personality of each animal resonates in every tile. Find your favorite & add it to your jungle or menagerie. |

~su harvey ~eagle, ne
Su Harvey uses a combination of methods- ancient, traditional, modern- often developing her own techniques to create her ceramic tiles. Utilizing the "cuenca" method~ carefully applying a thin ridge of slip to the tile before bisque firing~ allows Su to pool different glazes into the outlined areas and then re-fire each tile in a higher temperature, oxidation atmosphere. The result is soft seasonal palette and naturally occurring hues that enhance her attention to detail & craftsmanship while emanating spontaneity. |

~julie kradel ~cedar, mi
Julie Kradel has been exploring the relationships between animals, their human admirers and each other through her art for over two decades on her 20-acre home in Leelanau County. Her tiles, featuring horses, turtles, foxes, rabbits & other creatures, allow her to express, through this earth-based medium, the joy & beauty in nature's beasts. Observing the fauna that inhabit her farm, allows Julie to breathe realism & life into her work as their playfulness serves as constant inspiration. |
