Education-Practice Meetings for the Region

The East Bay Education-Practice Partnership group has thrived over the past year, with three meetings per year featuring guest speakers sharing hot topics relevant to nurse educators and the overall health care field.  2015 brought a speaker from the Pacific Business Group on Health sharing an Intensive Outpatient Care Program, an executive from John Muir-UCSF's ACO and the Dean of Nursing and Health Professions at USF sharing innovative programs in nursing education utilizing academic-practice partnerships.  The meeting invitations have been to East Bay schools and clinical sites, but we are interested in expanding participation to more areas of the SF Bay Area. Meetings are 2hrs on a Monday afternoon and will be held in Walnut Creek three times in 2016: February, May and September.  If you are interested in being part of this networking/education group, please contact Nikki West, HealthImpact Program Director, at nikki@healthimpact.org

Interest in Changing the Regional Clinical Placement Calendar From 2x to 3x per year

During the 2015 Annual CCPS Coordinators Survey, we saw a slight increase in the number of users that indicated interest in processing clinical placement requests 3x per year vs the current 2x per year. As the overall response rate to that survey was low, we followed up with a simple additional focused survey of CCPS users via email to inquire further. Based on the further feedback received, it was clear that while increasing the frequency of processing placement requests had come up, interest continued to be small and less than 10% overall, so the outcome supported no change at this time.

The findings were shared with discussion at the last LANRC Advisory Team in November 2015.  We remain open to changes going forward for this or other ideas, that are supported by most of the schools and clinical facilities in the Los Angeles region using CCPS.  We understand most all of the regions of the country that use CCPS also conduct placement cycles of 2x per year.

Guidelines for Developing Academic-Practice Clinical Affiliation Agreements

Lynette Dahlman, MSN, RN-BC, NEA-BC, Director, Clinical Education and Academic Partnerships at Huntington Medical Center, and Co-Chair, Los Angeles Nursing Resource Advisory Team shared her work on a project contributing to a leadership text for leaders in both service and academia for education and professional development to be published Spring 2016.

There has been growing interest in learning more about what typically constitutes a comprehensive Clinical Affiliation Agreement established between schools and clinical facilities for health professionals, and an absence of resources found in this area.  A document prepared by Lynette titled, "Guideline for Academic Practice Affiliation Agreements reviewed with the Advisory Team was determined to include key content found in most agreements.  The report is now provided as a resource to others.  Please visit the Los Angeles Nursing Resource Center under the "Resources" tab or access the document using the link below.

CCPS Placement Cycle Calendar
BANRC & LANRC
Fall/Winter 2016

February 15 - March 4, 2016
Clinical facilities review, confirm and extend availability through June 30, 2017 for both cohort and preceptor programs.   We understand some clinical facilities will need to modify future availability if census and building plans change. These changes can be done as needed throughout the year.

March 7 - March 25, 2016 (Preceptor requests due April 15)
Schools make requests for all courses that start Mid-August 2016 through the end of the fall or winter terms (courses that usually end by December 31)

March 28 - April 15, 2016 (Preceptor placement decisions due May 6)
Clinical facilities review proposed requests and make placement decisions. Clinical facilities are encouraged to accept long-standing/historic placements and to decline proposals they know they cannot accommodate as quickly as possible, as a courtesy to schools.
