The Cultch's 12/13 Season Presented By
January and February
December 26 - January 26: The Cultch and Blackbird Theatre present Don Juan |
Don Juan throughout history: Then and now
It's bold, saucy, and completely outrageous! This month, Blackbird Theatre is bringing its newest production to The Cultch, a brave reimagining of Don Juan, the scandalous comedy written by Molière in 1665.
The story of Don Juan is over 300 years old, and through the years there have been countless versions, from stage plays and operas, to books and poems. Molière's Don Juan wasn't the first version of this famous story, but it was certainly among the most scandalous! Originally titled Dom Juan ou le Festin de pierreI, Molière himself played Sganarelle when it premiered in Paris. Alas, the production was closed after only two weeks because audiences of the time found it highly offensive.
Another notable version of the classic tale emerged years later, this time as an opera entitled Don Giovanni. With musical composition by none other than Mozart, this version was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte and premiered in Prague in 1787, and is still performed around the world today. Death had no idea what this Granny was made of
"...the two masked leads of this wonderful show are among the most versatile and expressive characters in any production you'll see...Grim and Fischer is utter magic." - CBC A deathly comedy in full face mask, Grim & Fischer is a hilarious and touching show about Mrs. Fischer, a tenacious granny who battles it out with Death himself when he comes calling. It tackles, with heart and absurd humor, what it is to know that Death's hand is close. The show is wordless and performed in full face mask (a unique form that mixes European larval mask traditions with full face character styles resulting in a form unlike any other seen on North American stages). Audiences have described the experience as watching a living cartoon - the whimsy and imagination of Pixar or Jim Henson in theatrical form.

Tim Crouch re-imagines Shakespeare's Twelfth Night with I, Malvolio
"Fresh, funny, poignant and thought-provoking... his finest work to-date." - The Telegraph
I, Malvolio is a wild, hilarious and unsettling rant from a man 'notoriously wronged.' After falling victim to a forged love letter - leading to accusations of madness, a pair of ridiculous yellow stockings and ultimately no recompense for his sufferings - one of dramatic literature's most misunderstood characters will finally have his say. Part abject clown, part theatre-hating disciplinarian, Malvolio asks his audience to explore the pleasure we take in other people's suffering. This is a show for anyone who has ever been told off, called a name or has fallen in love with the wrong person. Suitable for audiences 11+ Click here for more information. Tickets are from $17 and are available at tickets.thecultch.com, by phone at 604-251-1363, or in person at 1895 Venables Street.

Don't miss the 2013 IGNITE! Mentorship deadlines: Apply today!
The Cultch is proud to offer amazing opportunities in the arts for youth in Metro Vancouver. We believe in their ability to thrive with positive guidance and hands-on experience. Every year we see firsthand the outstanding results of these hard working and highly creative individuals.
Check out what these past mentors and participants had to say about the program:
DAN MANGAN: "As a teenager, a program like this would have been of infinite use - not just because of the access to working career musicians and writers, but also through the experience and confidence garnered by recording in a professional environment and the immersion in a new community of young, talented, emerging artists from all over the city. It was great for me to watch the youth interact and support each other throughout the process, and most pertinently, just before their performances at The Cultch to their friends, parents and new fans." - Dan Mangan, singer/songwriter and past mentor
CHRISTINE QUINTANA: "The Cultch's youth program is so unique to Vancouver - we were treated as capable young professionals and handed the keys to the most beautiful venue in town. That trust and mentorship allowed us to rise to the challenge of creating a week-long festival." - Christine Quintana, youth program alumna
"I really enjoyed the people involved and the workshops were tremendous. My experience with my mentor was wonderful and the production of my play was and will be an important step in my development as a writer and playwright... The opportunities that this program has created for me seem to be endless." - 2011/2012 playwriting mentorship participant The program has expanded, too! We now offer mentorships in Directing-scripted and devised material (deadline Jan. 7), Dance, Songwriting, Spoken Word, Stage Design, and Publicity (deadlines Jan. 15), and Playwriting (deadline Mar. 31).
The Cultch's Youth programs are 100% free for participants. Anyone between the ages of 13 and 24 is encouraged to apply. The deadline to apply is January 7, 2013 (with exceptions). Click here for more information. |

Q: Do you have any special talents (like acting, writing, painting, humor, dog whispering, etc)?
A: I am a cartoon illustrator! I work with the rest of Vancouver's cartoonists at Cloudscape Comics and help publish graphic novels.
