Tornado Preparedness Drill
The National Weather Service will conduct the annual Kansas-Missouri Tornado Preparedness Drill sometime between noon and 2 pm on Tuesday , March 3, 2015. A simulated Tornado Warning will be issued at that time. They will also activate the All Hazards (weather) Radio system. These alerts messages will be indicate that this is a test of the system and not an actual Tornado Warning. This test will not performed if there is threating weather in the area to avoid any confusion on the part of the public. If that is the case, the backup date will be the following Thursday, March 5th within the same time frame.
When the simulated Tornado Warning is issued, we suggest listening to one or more of the following: National Weather Service radio, local radio and television stations, and listen for outdoor warning sirens. Do not rely solely on the outdoor warning sirens as these are not designed to be heard in all locations within the county or inside structures. In Wyandotte County, the test will consist of sounding the "Tornado Warning" signal (a three minute steady blast) on the Emergency Management outdoor warning sirens.
We encourage citizens to use this test as an opportunity to practice going to their tornado safe place. Whenever severe weather threatens, citizens are urged to stay tuned to local radio and television stations, or the National Weather Service weather radio (KID-77 - 162.55 MHz) for watches and warnings.
Personal responsibility and preparedness are vital to successful tornado safety. Many damaging tornadoes and thunderstorms are relatively small and short lived; early detection and warning are sometimes difficult or impossible.
In addition to listening to local radio and television stations, National Weather Service radio, prudent citizens will WATCH and LISTEN for tornado development from their home, school, shopping place, work, or vehicle whenever severe weather develops. Motor vehicles and mobile homes are generally unsafe during tornadoes. Occupants should seek shelter in a basement or low-lying area. Wherever you are, you should always know where to go for the best possible safety.
Citizens should report tornado sightings in Wyandotte County to the Emergency Management Department (573-6300) or to their Police and Fire emergency via 911.
This year Wyandotte County is again hosting a Severe Weather Awareness Seminar.
This Seminar is free and open to the public.
- Wednesday March 18, 2015, 7:00 p.m. in the Kansas City Kansas Community College's Performing Arts Auditorium. Guest Speaker: Andy Bailey, Warning Coordination Meteorologist, National Weather Service, Pleasant Hill, Missouri.

TWC Improves Video Quality
Beginning on March 3, 2015, Time Warner Cable (TWC) will take another step to improve video quality and increase internet speeds by providing video programming in digital-only format in the Kansas City area.
UGTV will continue to be carried on the Starter TV Tier, and may be found on Channel 2.
This process of converting analog channels to digital-only format began several years ago to manage bandwidth more efficiently and provide customers with the advanced services they expect. TWC will also begin encrypting Starter TV on its cable system, meaning customers will need to obtain a digital set top box, digital adaptor or CableCARD equipped Unidirectional Digital Cable Product to continue viewing these channels. Customers with digital equipment will be unaffected by this change.
Customers may call 816-358-8833 if they have questions.

Earned Income Tax Credit for WyCo Residents
Last year 18,546 working individuals and families in Wyandotte County received more than $49.4-million in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC). An average of $2,666.
"The EITC can put an extra $496 to $6,143 into the pockets of low income working individuals and families," said IRS spokesman Michael Devine. "If they qualify and claim the credit, they could pay less federal tax or even receive a refund beyond the amount of tax withheld." The EITC was created in 1975 as a work incentive. In Kansas, the EITC was worth more than $492 million to more than 212,500 working individuals and families last year. The average EITC benefit was $2,307. The IRS estimates that four out of five eligible taxpayers claim this tax credit, but some do not because they are unaware of the EITC or they don't know how to claim it. EITC, combined with the refundable portion of the Child Tax Credit, lifts more than 10 million people out of poverty annually; more than half are children. Those eligible to claim EITC but don't include non-English speakers, individuals who are self-employed or have service jobs in private households, childless taxpayers, rural residents, and recipients of other types of public assistance such as food stamps. New parents, grandparents raising grandchildren and foster parents may not realize they qualify. Some families, such as those in the military and those raising children with disabilities, may not realize there are special rules that may help them qualify. To make it easier to determine eligibility for this credit, the IRS has a self-help tool, the EITC Assistant at the irs.gov web site. The program answers questions about eligibility, filing status, qualifying children and credit amount. It is also is available in Spanish. "About one-third of the EITC eligible population turns over each year. So anyone who made less than $52,427 needs to check their eligibility at www.irs.gov/eitc," said Devine. Nationwide, almost 28 million households received more than $65 billion. The average credit was $2,400.
