KCK Burn Permit Process

Residents in Kansas City, Kansas are allowed to apply for a burn permit for the time period of the month of April 2015 and the time period of October 16, 2015 through November 15, 2015 at any of the Fire Stations currently staffed by the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department.  Kansas City, Kansas residents are limited to one 3-day burn permit per burn period that allows for the combustion of one 10 foot by 10 foot or smaller pile of naturally occurring residential organic yard waste generated onsite.   If you operate a business out of your home you are classified as a business and cannot participate.  Applications must be received and approved at least 24 hours prior to the commencement of burning.  Open burning with a permit is allowed between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The resident doing the burning must be at the burning site at all times.  Residents shall maintain a copy of the burn permit on site, an adequate water supply and/or fire extinguisher while conducting open burning.  In no circumstance shall open burning occur within 15 feet of any building or within 15 feet from any one's property line.  Piling of brush, tree limbs, grass and other organic materials are limited in size to 100 square feet at the base.

Each Burn Permit allows for one organic pile per permit, one permit per residential property. (yard waste generated such as tree limbs, leaves, weeds, brush and grass) All organic materials burned within the city limits of Kansas City, Kansas are limited to organic materials and/or burning without a permit shall be subject to Section I-7 (General Penalty, Continuing Violations) of the general provisions code of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/KCK.

At no time shall wire insulation, tires, rubber products, plastic, automobile products, paper, cardboard, construction chemicals, household chemicals or any other material that normally emits dense smoke, noxious odors or hazardous air pollutants be burned.

At any time, the Fire Chief or his designeemay revoke burn permits or ban open burning.  Weather conditions (high winds, low humidity) may make open burning too dangerous.  Open burning may also be suspended when air pollution "Red Alert" days are declared by the Mid America Regional Council, MARC, and the Unified Government.

Six Easy Steps to Lower Your Electric Bill

  • Set your thermostat at 68 F or lower during the day. At night, set the thermostat even lower. You can save 5% on your bill if your setback averages 2 degrees around the clock
  • Utilize the sun's heat to warm your home. Open drapes and blinds on sunny days.
  • Close drapes and blinds at night to keep heat inside.
  • Use your fireplace sparingly as most of its heat goes up the chimney, and close the damper after each use.
  • Change filter in your heater monthly. A new filter cost $3 but can save you $5 or more per month.
  • Use a humidifier. Moist air feels warmer and cuts down on static electricity.

Walk Kansas 2015

Walk Kansas is quickly approaching so lace up those walking shoes and get ready to move.  It all starts on Sunday, March 15th and concludes on Saturday, May 9th.   Walk Kansas is a team-based program that will motivate you and others to lead a healthier life by being more active and making better nutrition choices.

How does Walk Kansas work?

Co-workers, family members, friends and neighbors form teams of 6 people who will track minutes of physical activity and consumption of fruits and veggies during the 8-week challenge.  Each team will select a captain who will receive information from members including weekly minutes of activity and amounts of fruits and veggies consumed.  This information is added to the online reporting system through K-State Research and Extension.  From this you can track your progress as a team and determine if you are meeting your goals.

How do I get involved?

Gather up your team!  Registration materials for both the captain and participants will soon be available to download from the following...www.wyandotte.ksu.edu or you can pick up a packet at the K-State Extension Office, 1216 North 79th Street, 913-299-9300.  A $12.00 registration fee per person is required which includes a t-shirt, kick-off and wrap up celebration.

Registrations are due by Monday, March 2, 2015.

New 2015-2016 State Transportation Maps Available

Whether you want to drive across the state, find the closest airport, discover new places of interest or check out a state lake, the new 2015-2016 Kansas Official State Transportation Map published by the Kansas Department of Transportation has it all.

City and county indexes are above the map as well as a distance map that allows motorists to pick the best route to their destination. Visitor resources, helpful phone numbers and websites as well as list of all state recreation areas are also provided.

On the back of the map are inset maps of Kansas City, Wichita, Topeka and 13 other cities. There is information on how to get road condition information and highlights of Kansas driving laws.

"The state map offers so much more than just directions - it's a great source of information for those traveling or just want to learn more about Kansas," said Secretary of Transportation Mike King. "It's always good to have a state map handy."

Maps will be available at various travel information centers, attractions and other locations across the state. They can also be requested on the KDOT website at http://www.ksdot.org/maps.asp.
