Mayor Holland and DOJ to host Public Hearing

Mayor Mark Holland will host a public hearing at City Hall for the Mayor's Public Safety Recruitment Task Force this Thursday, February 5th, at the beginning of the 7:00 pm Board of Commissioners Meeting. The public is invited to attend and give comment regarding diversity in public safety recruitment in Wyandotte County.

Mayor Holland initiated formation of the Task Force in early 2014 and invited the Department of Justice to join the conversation early in the process. The Task Force is chaired by local pastor, Reverend Jimmie Banks, and consists of representatives from all KCK Public Safety Departments, Wyandotte County School Districts, The Archdiocese, Kansas City Kansas Community College, Donnelly College, appointees from all UG Commissioners and other community organizations.

"Our Task Force meetings have generated thoughtful discussion and innovative ideas," said Mayor Holland. "Now we need to hear from our residents. It is imperative their input is heard and considered as we move forward."

The goal of the Task Force is to form an action plan by April 2015 that includes steps to guide Unified Government Commissioners and Administration to improve diversity in public safety recruitment.

The meeting will be broadcast on UGTV (Time Warner Channel 98-2, Google Fiber Channel 141 and WOW Channel 25) and archived on the Unified Government's YouTube Channel.  More background information is available on the of the Unified Government  website.

How to Prevent and Thaw Frozen Water Pipes

Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. Pipes that freeze most frequently are those that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.

During cold weather, take preventative action...

  • Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing.
  • When the weather is predicted to drop below 15 degrees or below, or remain below freezing for an extended period of time, leave a drip of water running from the highest faucet in the house or those served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing because the temperature of the water running through it is above freezing.

Frozen Pipes?

If your pipes freeze...you should follow this three-step process.

  1.  If there's no water at all in your entire house, notify BPU at 913-573-9622 so a technician can be dispatched to your meter.
  2. If your meter isn't frozen, check your main water pipe.  Usually it freezes at the point where the pipe comes out of the ground.
  3.  Completely open the cold water faucet nearest the frozen pipe to relieve pressure and reduce the chance of breakage.
