Code Enforcement Auto Blitz
The Neighborhood Resource Center will be conducting citywide vehicle blitzes. The next round is scheduled to start next week and be completed on Friday, January 30, 2015.
"Our vehicle blitz efforts are a result of citizen concerns expressed in a community-wide survey regarding inoperable vehicles," says Greg Talking, Director of the Neighborhood Resource Center. "The NRC's Code Enforcement Division and KCK PD have partnered in this effort and we feel like we're having some success in addressing these concerns."
The areas of focus will be in Code districts 114, 224, 334 & 444. These districts correspond to Commission Districts 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, & 8. The citywide vehicle blitzes are intended to identify vehicles that are not operating or appear to be non-operable and have unregistered or expired tags.

Housing Redevelopment
Community Housing of Wyandotte County (CHWC) informed the Unified Government that they have completed 16 single family homes in the Escalade Heights development along Meadowlark Lane. The CHWC acquired this portion of the development after the previous developer relinquished the property during the declining housing market. Currently there are seven homes that are already occupied as CHWC continues to fulfill their contractual obligations as the developer of this TIF District.

After-School Program Begins in KCK
The 180 Degrees Program officially launched today at Northwest Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas. The pilot program is the first of its kind in KCK and is being funded through a $60,000 grant from the State of Kansas in partnership with Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools and Heartland 180, which is a new non-profit organization.
Jonas Hayes, Pastor of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church of Overland Park, KS, started a similar program in Greenville, Mississippi and is excited to get the after-school program officially started here in the Midwest. Hays said the first day began with an explanation about the program to youth and their parents, which was followed by an introduction of the program's facilitators,"
"We want the youth to be interactive so the first day we plan to have the rules and expectations developed by the youth. Asking them, what are important rules and expectations they think we should have to follow? This is a way of giving them a sense of ownership in the program," says Hayes.
Juvenile Services of Wyandotte County originally planned to kick-off the new pilot initiative a week ago, but organizers decided to reschedule the first day to ensure all of the resources and facilitators were in place. The day-to-day operations will be managed by Max Mendoza, Program Coordinator.
"This program has been proven to increase academic success, reduce truancy and juvenile related crime. If there aren't any options available for something constructive to do, often times youth create their own programs which lead to destructive behavior in the community. When given the right tools to learn, youth can have the confidence to become involved in the community and to live happy, healthy and productive lives," says Hayes who serves as the program's Regional Director.
The program will require youth to meet for 3-hours a day 4-days out of the week and will serve up to 50 Wyandotte County youth between the ages of 11 and 17 who are currently enrolled in a KCKPS educational program. The after-school program will serve youth who are either facing sentencing for a new offense or a sanction for violating conditions of their supervision, and/or have multiple unexcused absences.
"What sets the 180 Degrees Program aside from others is, 'community outreach.' This is one of the five core program components," said Jonas. "This takes to heart that success is not simply about the self-made man or woman; a healthy person gives back to the community."

KU Professor to be Guest Speaker at Annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet

The Unified Government Black History Committee will host the 23rd Annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet at 6:00 pm on Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Jack Reardon Convention Center located at 500 Minnesota Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas.
We're looking forward to having Reginald Robinson, professor and director of the School of Public Affairs and Administration at the University of Kansas, as the keynote speaker. As the former president and CEO of the Kansas Board of Regents, Robinson is a passionate community leader and has a distinguished career in public education. He has held numerous leadership and advisory posts at the state and federal level. In addition to the keynote speaker, every year we highlight the achievements of African Americans and organizations that promote the advancement of people of color in our community. Most importantly, the Black History Committee is proud to provide educational scholarships and academic support to promising students who have a desire to pursue a higher education.
The talented Kansas City, KS native and nationally renowned comedian, "B-Rich," will be host the event again this year. The evening also features live entertainment from Da Truth Band and special singing performance by the Smith sisters.
Tickets are $40.00 per-person or a $400.00 for a table of Ten (10). We could not continue to host this event without the charitable support of patrons like you. Crews Set for Third and Final Blast of Fairfax Bridge
The third and final controlled blast of the Fairfax Bridge is scheduled for Thursday, January, 29 at 9:00 a.m. Crews will detonate the northern portion of the truss from the north bank to the Missouri levee. Unlike the previous two blast events, this demolition cannot be seen from public access points. No public viewing will be available. Northbound and southbound U.S. Highway 69 will be closed from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. to accommodate this final event.
This is all part of replacing the current U.S. 69 Highway Bridge over the Missouri River. A new structure will be constructed in its place and will include multiple lanes and bike/pedestrian access. It will be open to traffic in December 2016. This project is shared by the Kansas Department of Transportation and MoDOT.
