New Homes Built in Downtown KCK
An open house was held last week to celebrate the newest addition of homes in the historic Douglass-Sumner neighborhood.
Four new homes were completed on the corner of 7th and Oakland Avenue as part of the continued revitalization of the area. A $1.2 million grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development covered construction cost. Community Housing of Wyandotte County (CHWC) is the developer and plans to build even more homes in the neighborhood once the four are sold.
CHWC is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3), community development corporation dedicated to revitalizing, stabilizing and reinvesting in Kansas City, Kansas neighborhoods. Our goal is provide meaningful programs to the residents of Wyandotte County to help them achieve, preserve and sustain quality neighborhoods and housing.

Healthy Campus Plan Unveiled
Last Thursday night nearly 175 people came out to see Gould Evans Architects' proposed plan for the Healthy Campus site. If you weren't able to attend, you can view the presentation on YouTube or download a copy of the slideshow here on our webpage.
The plan, being dubbed by Gould Evans the "Downtown Central Parkway," seeks to maximize the placement of three main components near the intersection of 10th Street and Minnesota Avenue: a grocery store, new community center and expanded green space.
Minnesota Avenue is Downtown KCK's Main Street and momentum has been building there. We believe that placing our economic engines - the grocery store and community center - on that thoroughfare will encourage future investment and development. Our main transit line also runs down Minnesota Avenue, making this site accessible to more people.

The plan also features a permanent farmer's market pavilion, recreational fields, housing options, urban agriculture, sidewalks and recognition of culturally relevant and historical sites. A major cornerstone of the design is a largely expanded green space that would connect Waterway Park and Big 11 Lake.
Gould Evans has solicited feedback from hundreds of residents and community members throughout the implementation planning process, beginning with a public roll-out event in May. One issue we heard often from residents was concern about the affordability of the Community Center that will be managed by the YMCA. In response, we announced last Thursday the formation of an Access Team that will work on the details of the development agreement with the YMCA. The Access Team will be chaired by Assistant County Administrator Gordon Criswell.
This project has generated renewed attention in our Downtown community that it hasn't seen in generations. The Kansas City Business Journal published a nice article on the development that you can read here.
The adoption of the Downtown Central Parkway Implementation Plan by the Unified Government will include a public hearing process for review by the Planning Commission on November 10 and Board of Commissioners on December 4. We would encourage you to participate in the creation and adoption of the plan by attending those hearings.

Road Closures
Based on information provided by both the UG's Public Works Department and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), we are able to provide motorist living in Wyandotte County an update on road and highway projects.
This information can be useful to prepare individuals, commuting to and from work, with early warnings on minor delays. This also encourages motorists to use alternate routes due to land and ramp closures.
