Argentine Opens New Walmart Grocery
A brand new Walmart Neighborhood Grocery officially opened for business in Argentine on Wednesday. The doors opened following a special grand opening and ribbon cutting event held in front of the new grocery.
Commissioner Ann Murguia was presented with the LEAFS Award (Leading Environmentalism and Forwarding Sustainability) by the EPA's Region 7 Administrator, Karl Brooks, for her ongoing efforts to revitalize the community through redevelopment projects that successfully remediate and reuse old and abandon Superfund sites. The site was once home to Kansas City Structural Steel more than 20-years ago.
"The Argentine Community has a spirit that you can feel its heartbeat from 25 to 30 miles away. We were welcome to work with a community that had a strong idea of what it wanted and this site was transformed," said Brooks. "The Environmental Protection Agency was privileged to work with the Argentine neighborhood on this."
In addition to the new Walmart, Argentine also has a new Save-A-Lot grocery store and Dollar General that was recently constructed on the same brownfield site.
Murguia kept mentioning the next project was a Walmart gas station, which appeared to gather momentum among the speakers and the crowd as well.
"Our UG staff worked tirelessly to present Walmart with an incentive package that our Board of Commission unanimously approved. This would not have happened without their vote and their support and I greatly appreciate them," Murguia said looking at her fellow Commissioners.
She went on to thank a host of other supporters, organizations, and staff for their efforts in making the project successful. Walmart also generously donated several thousand dollars to local schools in Argentine and organizations such as El Centro, the Kansas City Kansas Police Department and a few others.
Immediately following the program, shoppers filled the aisles of their newest local grocery.
Also in attendance for the ribbon cutting and grand opening event were Kansas Lt. Governor Jeff Colyer, Kansas Secretary of Commerce Pat George, and Mike King, Kansas Secretary of Transportation.

BPU Takes Public Comment on 2014 Integrated Resource Plan
The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU), in accordance with Federal Regulation, 10 CFR, Part 905.11, is taking public comment and making available for review its draft 2014 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP).
Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) is a process that involves consideration of demand-side options in addition to traditional supply-side options in meeting the power needs of an electrical system. Such planning focuses on the need to seek and evaluate opportunities for savings of demand and energy in addition to evaluating traditional supply resources. It is an on-going planning process that is updated as conditions, price costs, technologies and power requirements change. The object of such planning is to find a least cost solution which will supply customers the amount and quality of electric service they desire while at the same time promoting the utility's long term financial health.
BPU is required by law to file an Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) with Western Area Power Administration, an agency of the U.S. Department of Energy (WAPA), and update the plan every five years. As part of this requirement, BPU must also submit annual progress reports and the status of its IRP. The report being made available is the draft BPU's 2014 IRP.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day
On Saturday, September 27, 2014 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Unified Government's Community Policing and Sherriff's Office, local businesses, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs at various locations in Wyandotte County. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. The following are Prescription Drug Take Back locations for Wyandotte County:
DeGoler Pharmacy
5701 State Avenue, KCK
21 North 12th Street, KCK
2040 Hutton Road, KCK
202 Oak Street, Bonner Springs
Price Chopper
501 Commercial Drive, Bonner Springs
Hen House
8120 Parallel Parkway, KCK
Walgreens
2850 State Avenue, KCK
7739 State Avenue, KCK
Argentine Library
3104 Strong Ave., KCK (Argentine)
CVS Pharmacy
4645 Shawnee, KCK (Turner)
4300 Rainbow Blvd (Rosedale)
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines-flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash-both pose potential safety and health hazards.
