Transportation Planning Meeting in KCK

A series of regional meetings that give Kansans the opportunity to discuss their transportation priorities with the Kansas Department of Transportation and the Kansas Turnpike Authority have been scheduled for this fall.

The first meeting is in KCK on September 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. the Hilton Garden Inn, 520 Minnesota Avenue.

The eight local consultation meetings will include regional discussions on highway and other modal needs, including rail, aviation, transit and bike/pedestrian.

"We are looking for common goals at the state and regional level," said Kansas Department of Transportation Secretary Mike King. "It's important that we get feedback from communities as well as explain how the current transportation plan, T-WORKS is going."

The meetings will be conducted by KDOT and KTA staff. This year for the first time there will be the chance to pre-register and express any particular transportation topic that participants would like to discuss. Pre-registration is available at www.ksdot.org or here  pre-registration survey.

KDOT also conducted a series of local consultation meetings two years ago to hear what types of projects were important to communities.

"It's important to go back to these areas and see if there have been any changes to their transportation needs," King said. "This is a chance for those in the community to make sure their voice is heard."

Summaries of each local consultation meeting will be posted on the KDOT website at www.ksdot.org

Reusing Items

You often hear that we are living in a throwaway society.  There are many items which could be reused that are thrown away into the trash every day.  A study conducted in Berkley California and Leverett, Massachusetts has estimated that between 2% to 5% of trash is potentially reusable.  For example, things you can do include:

Consider Reusing Products:

  • Use a washable coffee cup and drinking glass.
  • Use washable plates and utensils.
  • Use cloth napkins, sponges, and dish cloths.

Maintain and Repair Durable Products:

  • Purchase durable appliances, electronic equipment and other products.
  • When possible repair products.

Reuse Bags and other items:

  • Reuse a canvas or tote bag when shopping for groceries.
  • Reuse colored paper, egg cartons and other items for arts & crafts projects.
  • Reuse newspaper, boxes, and bubble wrap to ship packages.
  • Reuse used lumber for birdhouses, compost bins, and other projects.

Borrow, Rent, or Share Items used infrequently.

  • Borrow or rent seldom used power tools.
  • Borrow or rent ladders, rug cleaners and floor buffers.
  • Borrow or rent seldom used party supplies and decorations.
  • Consider setting up a neighborhood tool lending library.

Sell or Donate Goods instead of throwing away.

  • Sell your used items at fairs, swap meets, garage sales, or on the internet.
  • Give hand-me-down clothes and items to the needy.
  • Donate clothes and items to nonprofit thrift stores.

Consider acquiring used clothing and products at thrift or consignment stores.  The condition of used clothing in these stores is screened.  In addition, many nonprofit organizations use these stores to help them raise needed funds.

BPU Partners with School Districts

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities recently launched an educational initiative in collaboration with the three school districts (KCK USD 500, Turner USD 202, and Piper USD 203) serving Kansas City, Kansas.  The purpose of this new emPOWER Education Program is to encourage environmental responsibility and teach utility safety standards, while promoting the importance of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for future learning to area youth.

In coordination with the school districts and teaching staff, BPU has created and designed a series of lesson guides that elementary, middle school, and high school teachers can incorporate into their lesson plans under the science strand, with a focus on energy, water, conservation, and environmental related issues.  The lesson guides include planning kits with tools and activities for each particular subject, and are designed for each age appropriate learning level. Just as important, this initiative aligns with the Next Generation Science Standards and meets the State of Kansas Common Core School District Standards.

"BPU is very excited to partner with our local school districts on the new emPOWER Education Program," stated Don Gray, General Manager of BPU. "BPU staff and school district representatives have been working on this effort for more than a year, and we're pleased that area students and the community in general will be able to benefit directly from this newest utility commitment to the sciences and environmental responsibility."

Additional information and classroom resources related to the emPOWER Education Program can be found at www.BPUemPOWEReducation.com.  In mid-September, video resources will be added to the site as well, covering the topics of energy, water and career spotlights.  The career portion of the program helps to guide students in the direction of science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.

As the emPOWER Education Program was inspired and created by teachers for our community, further teacher questions or feedback will be welcomed via this webpage.
