Phone Scam Alert
The Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office received reports of calls being made to residents informing them that a warrant has been issued for their arrest for either an offense or failing to appear for Jury Duty. The caller insists that if the fine is not paid immediately then they will be arrested and taken into custody.
It's also been reported that the caller uses several names to identify himself. He is using the names of Wyandotte County Deputies, the Sheriff, District Court Judges and even going as far as to identify himself as a Deputy or Detective.
The caller asks the citizen to call back when they have the number of their pre-paid money card. They also have a voicemail setup so that when the victim calls back it identifies the Perpetrator as Deputies for the Sheriff's office. Many of the calls also appear to be from a 913 area code.
The Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office does not call citizens advising them of warrants, nor do they ask citizens to call back with a pre-paid card number.
It appears that these phone calls are targeting mostly senior citizens at this time. Please do not follow any directions by these callers. Hang up and call the Sheriff's Office to file a report at 913-573-2861.
The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) stated there have also been a series of phone scams targeting electricity customers. These scams involve telephone callers claiming to be from BPU and then using various techniques to defraud customers. Some threaten customers with disconnecting electric service to their home or business if they do not make a payment immediately. The scam artists sometimes instruct customers to send them money via a prepaid cash card before their power is shut off.
Signs of a Scam
Always remember, often, scammers who operate by phone don't want to give you time to think about their pitch; they just want you to say "yes." But some are so cunning that, even if you ask for more information, they seem happy to comply. They may direct you to a website or otherwise send information featuring "satisfied customers." These customers, known as shills, are likely as fake as their praise for the company.

Schiltterbahn STAR Bonds Move Ahead
The Unified Government Board of Commissioners has unanimously approved a revised STAR bond district including the Schliterbahn Waterpark and planned development of the U.S. Soccer National Training Center.
The district could generate an estimated $295.5-million worth of sales tax revenue to help pay for the $665-million development which stretches from State Avenue to Parallel Avenue and from I-435 to 94th Street.
The new district amends the Schlitterbahn Vacation Village STAR bond district approved in 2005. The Kansas Department of Commerce authorized $225-million in STAR bonds for the waterpark project, but most of those bonds have not been issued because the Great Recession delayed the project. However, Schlitterbahn' s owners and investor have spent $220-million in private funding on the attraction.
The revised STAR bond plan divides the area into five project areas. One project area near Parallel and 98th Street calls for development of an auto mall with up to seven new car dealerships, a 150 room hotel, restaurants and a convenience store. That project is expected to begin this year and be built by the end of 2017.
A third project area calls for either 400,000 square feet of retail space or 275,000 square feet of retail plus offices for a corporate headquarters. The fourth project area will be home to the national soccer complex while development in area five is yet to be determined.
The new US Soccer training facility will make KCK and Wyandotte County one of the pinnacle locations for soccer in America. It will be the premier soccer development complex in the world and the new home of American soccer.
The new STAR bond project will not change the pay-off of the original Village West STAR bonds which are set to be paid-off in 2017.

NACo Drug Card Savings Update
The Unified Government joined the National Association of Counties prescription drug discount card program in 2006. Since then, Wyandotte County residents have saved more than $1.6-million on prescriptions. The card is free.
44 Kansas counties take part in the program. The total savings statewide is more than $7-million since the program started. The drug card may be handed out to anyone, providing a convenient way to supply a level of prescription drug coverage to county residents with no paperwork on their end to fill out and submit. This card, accepted at a host of pharmacies, can help citizens cope with their prescription drug prices.
Over $7-million in savings has been realized. Kansas NACo drug cards have been involved in purchases retailing $31.86-million. The $7-million savings is 22% off the retail cost. The average prescription retailed at $41.52, and the average savings per prescription was $9.18.

Wyandotte County Historical Museum
Smithsonian Traveling Exhibition
"Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program 1942-1964" August 1-November 16, 2014
You are invited to a special opening Sunday, September 14, 2014, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The opening will feature Dr. Jesus "Chuy" Negrete. He is a nationally known folksinger and musicologist. Please RSVP to 913.573.5002
Q: What was the bracero program?
A: The bracero program was a bi-national agreement between the U.S. and Mexico that allowed for bringing in contract workers to the U.S. During the bracero program, braceros were allowed to stay within the U.S. for up to 18 months, after which they had to return to Mexico. They were allowed to come back if they were re-contracted.
Q: What does the word "bracero" mean?
A: Bracero is a term used in Mexico for a manual laborer.
Q: What inspired the Smithsonian to begin working on this project?
A: The National Museum of American History holds a collection of photographs by photojournalist Leonard Nadel. Among the collections are pictures of the braceros' experiences. These images, coupled with the fact that many former braceros were getting older and there were few oral or written accounts of their experiences, inspired museum staff to begin working on the project. The project began as an oral history documentation and evolved into an exhibition.
