Wyandotte County Offers New Voting Options

Wyandotte County voters now have more ways to vote than ever before.

Wyandotte County Elections Commissioner Bruce Newby has opened a new satellite location for advance voting at Kansas Speedway. The advance voting site is located at 110th Street and I-70 (Exit 410) just south of the Kansas Speedway. The new location makes voting available to registered voters on both Saturdays before Election Day and the entire week prior to Election Day.

"Because of the ease of access to this location, we also hope to serve many county voters who can combine a shopping trip to the Legends or attendance at a sports event with voting.  We also hope this new voting venue will help to increase overall voter turnout," said Elections Commissioner Bruce Newby.

The Kansas Speedway is providing the space to the Unified Government at no cost. Newby hopes to add more satellite locations in the future.

"As we gain experience and success with this initiative, we hope to expand voting opportunities in other parts of our county if we can find suitable facilities and adequate funding," Newby said.

Meanwhile, voters also have three other ways cast their ballots.

(1) vote in advance by mail.

(2) vote in advance at the Election Office.

(3) vote at their polling place on Election Day.

What is a Primary Election?

The Primary Election is Tuesday, August 5th, 2014. This election is held for the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. It is the opportunity for members of each Party to choose their candidates who will advance to the General Election, November 4th.

As a Party election, the political parties set the rules for who is eligible to vote their Party ballot.

  • Voters affiliated with the Democratic Party vote a Democratic Party ballot.
  • Voters affiliated with the Republican Party vote a Republican Party ballot.
  • Voters who are not affiliated with either Party must affiliate to be eligible to vote a Party ballot.
  • Voters who are affiliated with the Libertarian Party are not eligible to vote in either Party election. Libertarian Party candidates have been selected by caucus. Libertarian Party voters may be eligible to vote in a non-partisan special election, such as the sales tax election in the City of Edwardsville.

Why should I vote?

Besides all of the obvious reasons, voters should know there are some very interesting races on both Party ballots this year.

The Democratic Party ballot has:

  • Two nominees for United States Senator. The contenders are Chad Taylor and Patrick Wiesner.
  • Two nominees for United States Representative. The contenders are Kelly Kultala and Reginald (Reggie) Marselus.
  • Three nominees for District Court Judge, Division 11. The three candidates are Timothy L. Dupree, Courtney Mikesic, and James T. Yoakum.
  • Many precincts will also be electing precinct committeemen and precinct committeewomen. The Primary is the only opportunity for party voters to elect their party precinct committee.

The Republican Party ballot has:

  • Four nominees for United States Senator. The nominees are Pat Roberts, D.J. Smith, Milton Wolf, and Alvin E. Zahnter.
  • Two sets of nominees for Governor/Lieutenant Governor. The nominees are Sam Brownback/Jeff Colyer and Jennifer Winn/Robin R. Lais.
  • Two nominees for Secretary of State. The nominees are Kris Kobach and Scott Morgan.
  • Five nominees for Commissioner of Insurance. The candidates are Beverly Gossage, David J. Powell, Ken Selzer, Clark Shultz, and John M. Toplikar.
  • Many precincts will also be electing precinct committeemen and precinct committeewomen. The Primary is the only opportunity for party voters to elect their party precinct committee.

National Soccer Training Center Coming to KCK

Mayor Mark Holland, Governor Sam Brownback and officials with Sporting Club KC have announced development of a $75-million national soccer training center in Kansas City, Kansas. The facility will be home to the National Training and Coaching Development Center, an elite athlete training and performance analytics campus and national youth soccer development programs.

The training center will be the premiere soccer development complex in the world and make Wyandotte County the new home of American soccer.

"Kansas' strong economy and Kansas City's reputation as a tremendous soccer city helped attract this state-of-the-art facility," Brownback said. "As a result, our state will benefit from new jobs, investment and an economic impact that is projected to exceed $1 billion."

"The addition of a new world class training facility is another example of what true public/private partnerships are all about," said Mayor Mark Holland, "U.S. Soccer has a solid track record of producing some of the finest soccer players, coaches and referees. This high quality training facility with structured programming along with Sporting Park, state-of-the-art soccer stadium, will undoubtedly transform Kansas City, Kansas, and our region into one of the top soccer venues in the nation."

The $75-million soccer village will be located at the southeast corner of Parallel Parkway and 98th Street on land donated by Schlitterbahn Vacation Village. It will provide a world-class environment to develop players, coaches and referees of all ages. The state-of-the-art facility will include approximately 100,000 square feet for a state of the art indoor facility with a practice field, eight lighted professional smart fields and eight youth fields. Additional amenities will include a climate-controlled indoor pavilion and specialized facilities tailored toward strength and nutrition, hydration, sports science, health and wellness, video and analytics. The complex will also feature a 125-room full-service hotel.

"This is a great opportunity for us to continue to grow soccer in Kansas City and further establish being the soccer capital of America," Sporting Club CEO Robb Heineman said. "To us, this is equivalent to bringing another sports franchise here, with the ultimate goal of helping the United States win the World Cup through youth soccer development, coaching training, advanced sports science and world-class facilities. This has been a long and complex process thus far, but we're excited for the vision of the project and to help bring substantial economic development to the area."

The project will be funded with STAR Bonds, which are repaid through new sales taxes generated by the development itself. The project will not effect the current Village West STAR bonds which are on track to be paid-off in 2017, 4 years ahead of schedule.

With the soccer training center's close proximity to Schlitterbahn Waterpark, it's expected additional new development will crop up nearby. David Brain, head of EPR Properties, a major investor in Schlitterbahn, said there will be "substantial further development on that quadrant of land" that will be constructed simultaneously with the soccer complex.

"We look forward to the new partnership with U.S. Soccer and the continued relationship with the Governor the Department of Commerce, Sporting Club and Schlitterbahn as we continue to expound on the success of economic development projects in our community," said Mayor Holland.

An economic benefit study estimates the training complex will generate have a $1.5-billion impact, create 244 new fulltime construction jobs and 529 fulltime jobs related the training center when it opens. The study also projects the facility will generate more than $48-million in new, net tax revenues for Wyandotte County and KCK over the initial 30 years after construction and more than $75-million in tax revenues for the state of Kansas.

The study also estimates that development of the project could support jobs equating to more than $1.5 billion in earnings over the 30-year term, as well as 244 full-time-equivalent jobs for Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., during construction and 529 full-time-equivalent jobs during annual operations of the facilities. The state of Kansas, according to the study, could support 564 jobs during construction and 446 during operations.

The new U.S. Soccer training complex will provide a world-class environment to develop players, coaches and referees of all ages and increase opportunities for youth and their soccer development.

The facility will house a variety of U.S. National Team training camps and bring opportunities for Sporting Park to host matches for the men's and women's National Teams at the youth and senior levels. The complex will also feature referee and coach education sessions and many additional U.S. Soccer events.

I-670 at 7th Street Bridge Project

On Monday, August 4, an expansion joint replacement project will begin on the westbound I-670 over 7thStreet bridge in Kansas City (Wyandotte County). Project work includes the replacement of the bridge expansion joints. Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.

Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4, westbound I-670 over the 7th Street bridge from the Kansas/Missouri state line west to just past the west end of the bridge will be reduced to ONE OPEN LANE while crews set traffic control for the project work zone. Traffic will be detoured through the project work zone via concrete barrier, signage and cones. NOTE: The traffic control for this project will be directly adjacent to a Missouri Department of Transportation bridge repair project that has one lane of westbound I-670 over Genessee/Wyoming/Liberty/Beardsley Roads closed in the West Bottoms area. KDOT and MoDOT plan to coordinate traffic control on both projects to minimize overall traffic impacts for the traveling public.

Advance message boards will alert traffic to the westbound I-670 lane closure. There will be an 11-foot lane width restriction through the project work zone throughout the duration of the project. Drivers should expect delays during peak commute times and may wish to use alternate routes if possible.
