WyCo Job Growth Twice National Rate

Wyandotte County created more new jobs in 2013 than most cities across the country and in the KC metro.

That's according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics "County Employment and Wages" report for the fourth quarter 2013.

Wyandotte County was strong in terms of job growth among metro area counties with a 3.4% increase. Johnson County ranked second in the metro with a 2.5% job growth rate, while Jackson County showed only a 0.4% increase.

Elsewhere in Kansas, Sedgwick County (Wichita) had a 1.2% rate and Shawnee County (Topeka) had a 1.8% job growth rate.(as well as Sedgwick and Shawnee counties in Kansas) and was nearly twice the national growth rate. Nationally job growth was 1.8% overall.

Wyandotte County now recorded 84,800 jobs in the county between December 2012 and December 2013.

Wyandotte County ranked 46th nationally out of the 335 largest counties.

Federal Funding Requests Can Benefit Downtown KCK

There are currently several Unified Government federal funding requests on the table and, as part of the process, the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) is asking for community comments and input.

Citizens are encouraged to take a minute to go to the project website, click "Unified Government" and leave a quick note of support for two projects that will directly (and positively) impact downtown:

  • Minnesota Avenue 9th to 5th
This would extend the enhanced streetscape around the transit center from 9th to 5th streets.
  • 12th & 10th Street Bikeway, Metropolitan to Quindaro
This would provide designated bike lanes within enhanced complete streets along 10th Street in downtown, which runs directly through the Healthy Campus.

Parks and Recreation Holds Annual Kids Fishing Derby

June 14th marked the 29th year of the Kid's Fishing Derby. An event the founders, Ed and Ione Trapp, had envisioned for the community.

The Derby was held at Wyandotte County Lake Fishing Kid's Fishing Pond. The registration table opened at 7:00 a.m. and remained busy all morning.  There were a total of 192 registered to fish.  The fishing began at 8: 00 a.m. and in less than 1-minute after the fishing began kids were arriving at the weigh station with their catch of the day.

"It seemed that the majority of the fish caught were keepers and would be good eating," says Shaya Patrick, Parks and Recreation.

The largest fish was caught by 5 year old Ashely Cole, weighing in at 3lbs 5 oz. Here are the results for each age division.

Road Closure Sign
Road ClosuresConstruction Barrel

Based on information provided by both the UG's Public Works Department and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), we are able to provide motorist living in Wyandotte County an update on road and highway projects.

This information can be useful to prepare individuals, commuting to and from work, with early warnings on minor delays. This also encourages motorists to use alternate routes due to land and ramp closures.

KDOT Program Will Reduce Number of Deficient Bridges on Local Road Systems

A Kansas Department of Transportation program designed to reduce the number of deficient bridges on local road systems will also benefit the state's agriculture industry.

The new $10 million program, announced today in Hutchinson by Transportation Secretary Mike King, will provide up to $120,000 to local jurisdictions - primarily counties - to replace small bridges that are rated deficient. Bridges that qualify must have a daily vehicle count of less than 100 and be 20 to 50 feet in length.

"While qualifying bridges under the program have relatively low traffic numbers, they are important routes for farmers to get their equipment to fields and their crops to market," said Secretary King.

"Many of these bridges have a low load rating and it isn't legal or safe for some of today's large farm equipment to cross."

There are approximately 20,000 bridges on Kansas' local road systems and about 18 percent of those are structurally deficient. Of those, about 1,800 to 1,900 would qualify for funding under program guidelines.

Local jurisdictions awarded funds must provide a 10 percent match.

Applications will be accepted through mid-September and project selections will follow in early October. More information about the application process will soon be posted on KDOT's website on the Local Projects page.
