Coffee Shop Coming to Minnesota Avenue

Renovation of the former Katz Drug store at 730 Minnesota is underway by Loretto Properties. The group, owned by Lamar Hunt Jr, is also refurbishing the original Environmental Protection Agency office building at 736 Minnesota.

The Katz building will be home to Cup on the Hill, a nonprofit gourmet coffee shop dedicated to teaching job skills to youth in the neighborhood. The coffee shop will be on the ground floor while the upper two floors will house offices for several nonprofit groups and professional services firms.

The former EPA building is being proposed as a satellite classroom location for Kansas City Kansas Community College and Donnelly College.

The Unified Government will extend the Minnesota Avenue streetscaping from 7th to 8th Streets to compliment the new developments.

Loretto Properties spent $180,000 buying the Katz Building and purchased the former EPA building for $100,000. The developers plan to spend $1.5-million refurbishing the buildings.

The Minnesota Avenue projects are the most recent efforts to revitalize downtown. Last year the old Horace Mann School on State Avenue was converted into 30 apartments and the corner of 7th and Minnesota is home to a new Transit Center.

Also in the works are plans for a Healthy Communities Campus with a grocery store, community center and fitness center in the area around 10th and State Avenue.

UG Considers Studying Convention Center in Western WyCo

The Unified Government is considering a feasibility study for construction of a possible convention center in western Wyandotte County. The proposed study was approved by the Unified Government Economic Development and Finance Standing Committee this week. It will be discussed and voted on by the full Unified Government Commission Thursday.

If approved, the Unified Government will issue a request for proposal and hire a firm to conduct a feasibility study which will focus on the demand for a convention center, what size it should be and where it should be located.

The study will look at the entire I-435/Western Wyandotte/Village West area to determine the best location. Several of the attractions in the Village West area have expressed strong interest in a convention center. Several of the businesses have made commitments to help pay for the study, which is estimated to cost $50,000.

If it moves ahead, the convention center feasibility study is expected to take 60-90 days.

Home Energy Audit program Improves Efficiency, Lowers Bills

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) is now offering customers access to a low-cost home energy audit, with the potential of helping residents improve the efficiency of their home while reducing overall energy costs.

BPU will arrange for certified auditors to conduct an energy audit on a customer's home, helping identify ways to improve energy efficiency, cut costs, and benefit the environment.  While other energy audits can cost up to $500.00, BPU is making this service available to its residential customers for only a $50.00 fee.  Even better, if a customer makes the recommended improvements to their home within 90 days, BPU will refund the $50.00 fee - so homeowners end up paying nothing.

On-site energy audits include the following: 1) a blower test to identify costly air leakages; 2) a Combustible Appliance Zone (CAZ) test); 3) up to 10 free compact fluorescent bulbs; 3) recommendations for energy efficiency improvements, and; 4) development of an Energy Conservation Plan (ECP).

To schedule an appointment, customers should call 913-573-9997 or e-mail EnergyAudit@bpu.com.  Appointments are limited and available on a first come, first served basis.

BPU Home Energy Audits are available only to homeowners who have at least 12 months of electric usage with BPU.  The $50.00 appointment fee will be refunded by BPU when customers provide a Certificate of Project Completion.
