Holland Secures $1 Million for Health Campus
William Epperheimer, President and CEO of the Wyandotte Health Foundation, presented Mayor Holland with a $1 Million donation during the Mayor's Town Hall meeting last Thursday. The donation will go towards the construction of the proposed Healthy Campus in downtown Kansas City, Kansas.
"The Foundation is pleased and honored to play a significant role in the development of a Healthy Campus that will improve the physical environment of our older Downtown area," said Epperheimer. "Our mission is to promote and improve the health of Wyandotte County citizens, particularly the indigent, through grants and collaborative efforts and we believe the Healthy Campus advances that mission."
The Mayor was joined by Board Chairman Leon Logan and Immediate Past Chairman, Dr. Ray Daniels as they unveiled the check in front of a standing room only crowd. The Board of the Foundation expressed its hope that the Campus would include a primary care clinic and/or an urgent care clinic to serve the uninsured and medically underserved residents of the area.
The site being reviewed for development is near Big 11 Lake at the intersection of State Avenue and 10th Street, where planning has begun for a new grocery store and community center. Those two anchor projects not only offer $30 million of economic development in a location that has a strong need for investment and growth, but offer residents additional access to healthy food and fitness options.
"I can't thank the Wyandotte Health Foundation enough for supporting the vision of a Healthy Campus in Downtown KCK." said Mayor Mark Holland. "My hope is that this development will serve as a national model for healthy living in an urban area. The Foundation's partnership will be pivotal to helping us realize this exciting vision."

ANDA Donates to UG for Community Improvements
The Argentine Neighborhood Development Association has donated more than $675,000 in cash contributions, property and community recreational improvements to the Unified Government.
The contributions include: the donation of the property valued at $500,000 for a new Public Safety Campus; $10,000 cash donation to the KCK Police Department for new office equipment; improvements to Vega Field, including three new park benches and two concrete pads for existing benches; new interior lighting for the restroom facilities; and improved tennis courts at Emerson Park which will include resurfacing of the courts, new fencing, nets and lighting.
The contributions and improvements were made possible by leveraging the multi-million dollar redevelopment project that ANDA is engaged in on the 17 acre brownfield site located in Argentine. ANDA raised$1.6-million in funds as part of a public/private partnership to build a Save A Lot grocery store on Metropolitan Avenue, a Wal-Mart Neighborhood Grocery and construction of the Simmons Villas 22-unit senior living project.

May is Mental Health Month
WyCo agencies offer broad range of services to address mental health needs of kids and adults
Two related mental health agencies are available in Wyandotte County to address behavioral and emotional health needs of children, adolescents and adults.
PACES, serving youth and families, and Wyandot Center, serving adults, date their founding to 1953 when the Wyandotte County Child Guidance Center was established in Kansas City, Kan.
By 1957, the agency added services for adults, and became the community mental health center serving Wyandotte County, known then as the Wyandot Mental Health Center. In late 2008, children's services adopted the name "PACES." In 2010, through a corporate restructuring, PACES and Wyandot Center were brought under the umbrella of Wyandot, Inc., a parent company providing back-office and support services. Each agency has its own staff and Board of Directors.
"What's important is that residents of Wyandotte County know that we have a strong history of service and the current infrastructure to serve the mental, behavioral and emotional needs of persons of all ages," explains Pete Zevenbergen, Wyandot, Inc. president and CEO.
PACES
PACES serves 3 to 22 year olds and families. Services include case management, therapy (individual, group and family), psychiatric and medication services, free parenting classes, psychosocial groups for skills development and the Exchange & Visitation Center for families separated by divorce or conflict. Recently, PACES began offering First Steps, a mental health program for preschoolers to help them develop age-appropriate behaviors and emotions and be prepared for entry into kindergarten.
PACES offers services at multiple locations in Wyandotte County - schools, family homes, churches and recreation centers. PACES office locations include:
- 1301 North 47th St., Kansas City, Kan.
- 1620 S. 37th St., Kansas City, Kan.
- 7840 Washington Ave., Kansas City, Kan.
More information can be found at www.paceswc.org or by calling 913-563-6500.
Wyandot Center Wyandot Center provides comprehensive outpatient services for adults experiencing anxiety, depression and other mental health issues. These services include a range of therapy (individual and group).
Persons with persistent and serious mental illness have access to community support services: case management, psychiatric and medication services, peer support, attendant care, hospitalization screens, supported employment and supportive housing.
Wyandot Center offers several options for persons experiencing a mental health crisis.
- 24-hour Crisis Line; 913-788-4200.

The Kansas City Kansas Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc (KCK CVB) celebrated another successful year at its annual Tourism Celebration on Wednesday, May 7, 2014. The luncheon was held at the Jack Reardon Convention Center, 520 Minnesota Ave., in Kansas City, KS. Approximately 165 people were in attendance, including elected officials and tourism industry professionals. Four awards were presented to the following tourism advocates and organizations.
The Tourism Event of the Year Award was presented to the 2013 AT&T MLS All Star Game, held July 31, 2013 at Sporting Park. The award was presented by Jimmy Lopez, Cabela's Kansas City and a former member of the KCK CVB Board of Directors. The MLS All Star Game was a sell out with 21,175 in attendance and ticket buyers from 36 states. The game was broadcast worldwide with over 250 credentialed media covering the match for local, national and international publications. Combined US and Spanish viewership of the game was over 616,000. The award was accepted by Chris Wyche, Executive Vice President of Operations for Sporting KC.
The Tourism Organization of the Year Award was presented to Dave & Buster Kansas City. The award was presented by Matt Lawrence, General Manager of Great Wolf Lodge and a member of the KCK CVB Board of Directors. Dave & Buster's was one of the original businesses to open at Legends Outlets KC. It currently has 125 employees and in 2013, did just under 9 million dollars in sales, while hosting over 620 corporate and social events. The award was accepted by Greg Jackson, General Manager of Dave & Buster's.
The Tourism Advocate of the Year Award was presented to former Unified Government County Administrator Dennis Hays. The award was presented by Gary Ortiz, Assistant County Administrator for the Unified Government and a member of the KCK CVB Board of Directors. Mr. Hays was thanked for his many years of service and significant contributions to tourism. "Kansas City, KS is the number one tourism spot in the state of Kansas for a reason: and a large part of that reason is named Dennis Hays" stated Mayor Mark Holland. Mr. Hays retired from the Unified Government in March of 2014. The award was accepted by Dennis Hays.
The Excellence in Hospitality Award was presented to Justin "Doc" Shobe, Corporate Account Manager for Kansas Speedway. Doc was unable to attend the award ceremony due to commitments at Kansas Speedway for the upcoming race weekend, but KCK CVB staff presented the award in advance of the luncheon in front of his Kansas Speedway colleagues. The award recognized Doc for his support and partnership with the bureau while showing professionalism, hospitality and exceptional customer service to all visitors.
The theme of the Tourism Celebration was "Kansas City Kansas - Insanely Fun", chosen because Kansas City KS was recently named by Guinness World Records as the home of the World's Tallest Waterslide, Verruckt at Schlitterbahn Waterpark Kansas City. Verruckt, which means "Insane", measured in at 168', 7". Also, debuted at the Tourism Celebration were several short video vignettes created by the KCK CVB to pique the interest of potential visitors to Kansas City, KS. The videos may be viewed on the KCK CVB's website at www.visitKansasCityKS.com.
