Regional Pass Signals a New Era of Regional Transit Cooperation

Today marks another milestone for regional transit cooperation with the availability of a universally accepted transit pass.

Beginning April 1, a commuter can use a single pass on any of the four local transit services in the region. Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, Johnson County Transit, Unified Government Transit and the City of Independence all will accept The JO Standard Express Monthly Pass from Johnson County Transit.

"This is an important step in making transit easier to navigate for current riders and more attractive to new riders in the Kansas City region," said Robbie Makinen, co-chair of the Transit Coordinating Council and chair of the KCATA Board of Commissioners. "This is the first of many things that the Coordinating Council is working on to make transit a stronger travel option in our region."

This universal pass acceptance was made possible by a multi-agency agreement and is a precursor to a regional pass. A regional pass will be created following the regional fare study that is currently being conducted.

To use The JO pass on Metro, JO and Inde-Bus service, simply slide the pass swipe in the farebox reader on top of the farebox. On Unified Government Transit, just show the bus driver the pass. The pass is valid for fare on all fixed route service except for higher priced Metro commuter express routes and The JO's K-10 route to Lawrence, Ks.

Other priorities for the Regional Transit Coordinating Council include regional paratransit coordination and integration of travel information online and via phone.

Project Safe Celebrate Aims to Keep Youth Safe During Prom and Graduatoin

The Wyandotte County District Attorney's Office is partnering with various organizations in

Project Safe Celebrate.  This project is a joint effort to encourage high school students to celebrate safely during the prom and graduation season.

Unfortunately, risky behavior has become an integral part of some teenagers' prom and graduation celebrations. Each spring District Attorney Jerome A. Gorman prosecutes teens commit crimes such as: minor in possession of alcohol, driving under the influence, open container violations, and criminal damage to property.  "Even worse, we know that the use of alcohol heightens the chance of sexual assault.  In fact, approximately half of all sexual assaults involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, victim or both," said District Attorney Gorman.

"This is such an important season for our youth and we want them to know that we value them and we take these matters seriously," said District Attorney Gorman.  Gorman believes that educating and protecting the youth of Wyandotte County is a community effort. Here are just a few of the ways his office is uniting with other groups to reach as many people as they can, in as many different ways as they can:

  • The District Attorney's Office is increasing their presence on Facebook and Twitter and will link all high schools and partnering organizations together through #safecelebrate.
  • The Kansas City Kansas Police Department and the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department will perform "saturation patrols" on the prom nights of all Wyandotte County high schools.  Representatives from the District Attorney's Office will ride with officers to assist law enforcement with any needs that may arise, and to host "tweet-alongs" under the Twitter handle @WYCODAoffice.
  • The USD #500 Police Department and the Kansas City Kansas Police Department are teaming up to identify and seek out parties where drugs and alcohol may be present.
  • Liquor and cereal malt beverage retailers across Wyandotte County will be especially mindful of attempts to purchase alcohol by teens or by others on their behalf and will refuse to sell to these people.
  • Hotel managers have been informed of the prom dates for Wyandotte County high schools and will report all unsupervised prom activities to the police.
  • The Kansas Department of Transportation has funded the creation of several posters to be displayed in Wyandotte County high schools.

District Attorney Gorman has designated Candace Golubski as project manager for Project Safe Celebrate, as this is a large undertaking. "We have a number of organizations involved in the project.  A lot of work has gone into coordinating all of the events and activities associated with Project Safe Celebrate," Golubski remarked. "Our hope is that next year and the years to come, the project will continue to expand, possibly even into the surrounding counties.  We've got big ideas, and the more support we have, the more we can do for the students."

April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month
Cell phone distracted driving is an epidemic in the United States, joining alcohol and speeding as a leading factor in fatal and serious injury crashes. Thousands die senselessly every year due to drivers using cell phones - handheld and hands-free, and the time is now to do something about it.

  • Cell phone use is a factor in nearly 1 in 4 crashes.
  • In 2009, 5,474 people were killed and an estimated 448,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving cell phone distracted driving.

Use the facts and resources here to educate yourself and your workplace about the dangers of cell phone use behind the wheel and help stop this deadly behavior. Banning cell phone use while driving isn't just about keeping you safe-it's about keeping everyone on the roadways safe.

Don't let you or your loved ones become another statistic.
