UG Citizen Satisfaction Survey

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas is planning for the future by asking randomly selected Wyandotte County households to complete a survey about their perception of city and county government services and quality of life.

The Citizen Survey will be an important tool for the Unified Government Board of Commissioners who will use the results as input for funding priorities.  Surveys will be mailed on January 27, 2014 to 3,600 randomly selected households.  Spanish speaking interpreters will be made available for those needing this service to successfully complete the survey. The goal is to get a response rate of at least 33%.

The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete. The time invested in completing this survey will influence decisions made about the city's and county's future.  Individual responses will remain completely confidential.  The results are tabulated and viewed only as a whole.

The Unified Government is partnering with ETC Institute which is one of the nation's leading firms in the field of local government research.  Respondents will be provided a self-addressed, stamped envelope to return their responses to ETC.  There will also be an option to complete the survey via the internet. Some residents may receive a telephone call reminding them to complete the survey.

Fitch Rating Report

This Thursday, Fitch Ratings released its annual review of the Government's subordinate lien 2010-B STAR Bonds issued for the construction of Sporting Park.  The 2010-B stadium financing was for $150 million.

As of December 31, the outstanding principal is $98 million. The Fitch report refers to strong revenue growth from 2011-2013 and "calculates that pledged revenues should be sufficient to repay the bonds three years prior to maturity (2018) even if revenues were to decrease by 8% annually."  However, given the current revenue stream, the bonds are expected to be paid off by January 2017.

Fitch upgraded its rating from BBB+ (positive) to A- (positive outlook).  The A- rating for a sales tax-supported financing should be viewed positively.

Congratulations to Lew Levin, Director of Finance, and the enitre Finance Department on their continued good work to advance the financial future of the Unified Government.

Tips for Curbside Recycling on Windy Days

On windy days, items in your curbside recycling bins are susceptible to blowing.  Listed below are some suggestions of how to prevent recyclables from blowing out of recycling bins:

  • Flatten plastic gallon jugs and plastic bottles and place them in the bottom of the bin.
  • Place recyclables in paper bags and fold the bags closed to keep the contents from blowing out.
  • Use some string to bundle and tie your newspapers, magazines, and fine paper together and place them on the top of the other items in your bin.
  • Place heavier items such as cardboard and magazines on the top of other recyclables in your bin.
  • Do not put out a half-full recycling bin if it's windy day, but instead wait another week until the bin is full before putting it to the curb.
  • Put your bin out by 7 a.m. the morning of your pick up, rather than the night before to reduce the risk that your recyclables will blow away during a blustery night.
  • Know the holiday schedule and do not place bins out on holidays when they will not be picked up.  Monday holidays push back collection one day for the whole week.
  • Use a larger container such as a trash container.  When using another container make sure to write recycling on several sides of the container.  If possible place your green recycling bin next to the larger container.
  • If your green recycling bin blows away you can pick up another bin at the Fleet Center at 5033 State Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas.  Ask the Parks Department and they can assist you with a bin.  Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Eagle Days Event Draws Record Attendance

A record crowd of more than 1,000 people attended the annual Eagle Days event at Wyandotte County Lake Park over the weekend.

This year was the first time in 13-years the event was held on two consecutive days. Those in attendance were able to see hawks, falcons, owls and of course the country's national symbol; the Bald Eagle. "BPU is proud to sponsor this local event which recognizes a national icon and the preservation efforts that have helped sustain the American Bald Eagle," said Don Gray, general manager of BPU. "We are excited to be a part of this educational opportunity for Wyandotte County residents and our community."
