KCK Celebrates MLK Day
Mayor Mark Holland and Unified Government Board of Commissioners celebrated the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday Monday with area ministers and the community at the Jack Reardon Convention Center located at 5th & Minnesota.
This year's guest speaker was the Reverend Doctor Otis Moss, Jr., retired pastor of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church located in Cleveland, Ohio, and co-pastor with Rev. Martin Luther King, Sr. Moss spoke to the theme, "Martin, Mahatma, Mandela; still paying the price for The Dream! - how long?"
There were more than 2,500 people in attendance for the annual King Celebration.

State of the Government Address
Mayor Mark Holland invites you to join him as he delivers his first State of the Government Address as Mayor/CEO of the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the Jack Reardon Convention Center located in Kansas City, Kansas.

Eagle Days Soars Back for Two-Day-Event
Catch a glimpse of the country's national symbol during Wyandotte County's 2014 Annual Eagle Days Celebration, January 25th and 26th, sponsored by the Kansas City BPU. Now expanded to include a second day of activities, this annual event helps to celebrate the American Bald Eagle and educate the public about wildlife in Wyandotte County.
"BPU is proud to sponsor this local event which recognizes a national icon and the preservation efforts that have helped sustain the American Bald Eagle," said Don Gray, general manager of BPU. "We are excited to be a part of this educational opportunity for Wyandotte County residents and our community."
This year's event will take place at both the F.L. Schlagle Library and Davis Hall in Wyandotte County Lake Park during the two days.
Saturday's events will occur between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and include eagle crafts, live Bald Eagle presentations by Operation Wildlife and opportunities to view a variety of owls, hawks, kestrels and falcons. There will also be Bald Eagle viewings along the lake. Events will repeat on Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. See full schedule below for more information.
This event is free and open to the public. Take the West Road upon entering park to F.L. Schlagle Library or the East Road to Davis Hall.
In addition to the Kansas City BPU, the 2014 Eagle Day Celebration is being sponsored by the Wyandotte County United Government Parks and Recreation Department, the Kansas City, Kansas Public Library and Operation Wildlife. KCK CVB 2013 Highlights
The mission of the Kansas City Kansas Convention & Visitors Bureau is to market Kansas City Kansas as a visitor destination and to increase the number of overnight stays.
The 2013 hotel occupancy rate for Wyandotte County was 61.2% Year to Date (YTD) as of the end of November. This is the highest occupancy rate since 2009, which was a low point for travel in the US. 2013 also showed the YTD Average Daily Room Rate of $92.63, the second highest rate in the KC metro.
During 2013, the KCK CVB generated over 12 million digital and print impressions through advertising, distributed 50,000 visitor guides and 100,000 visitor brochures and handed out 6,000 welcome packets to our visitors.
Over 82,000 people visited our website - www.visitKansasCityKS.com.

22nd Annual Black History Banquet
Dr. Mildred Edwards, Executive Director, Kansas African American Affairs Commission, will be the guest speaker. This year's theme, "African Americans; loving yourself in an era of diversity."
The event will be held from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm at the Jack Reardon Convention Center located at 500 Minnesota Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas. Tickets are $40.00 per person or $320.00 for a table of 8. A portion of the ticket purchase goes to the funding of scholarships presented to local college institutions to support and enhance student academic achievement.
The annual event will be hosted by KCK's own local comedian, B-Rich. The program also includes special live music performances by the Leon Brady Percussion Academy, the soulful and electrifying music group Karma and gospel selections by the talented Tifani Portley.

It is Going to be an INSANE Summer
The Verruckt @ Schlitterbahn
Kansas City KS is proud to be the home to The Verruckt waterslide at Schlitterbahn, opening May 23 as the tallest waterslide in the world. At 17 stories high, Guinness World Book of Records will make it official at an April 25 measuring event at 10:00 a.m.

BPU Ethics Commission Meeting
The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) Ethics Commission will meet on Tuesday, January 28th at 4:00 p.m. in Conference Room B of the West Wyandotte Public Library, located at 1737 North 82nd Street in Kansas City, Kansas.
The purpose of the Ethics Commission is to ensure proper implementation of BPU's code of ethics and to review and report on all violations of the ethics policy.

Police Report Desk Relocates to MetroCenter
The Police Report Desk will be moving to its new Mid-Town Patrol Division located at 849 N. 47 Street, Suite A effective January 27, 2014.
The Report Desk is currently located at the new Neighborhood Resource Center at 4951 State Avenue.

Road Closures
Based on information provided by both the UG's Public Works Department and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), we are able to provide motorist living in Wyandotte County an update on road and highway projects.
This information can be useful to prepare individuals, commuting to and from work, with early warnings on minor delays. This also encourages motorists to use alternate routes due to land and ramp closures.
