A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD AUGUST 2015
|
It is with considerably mixed emotions that our board accepted Jason Wentworth's resignation as director of SEMAP (effective August 21st). Jason was asked by John Lebeaux, the Commissioner of the Massachusetts Departments of Agricultural Resources to serve as Assistant Commissioner for MDAR. We are excited Jason has taken the opportunity to expand his work as a valued asset in our agricultural community to the entire Commonwealth. We are proud of the work Jason and the SEMAP team have accomplished during his tenure, deepening SEMAP's relationship with our agricultural community in Bristol, Norfolk, & Plymouth Counties. While we are sad to have a pair of big shoes to fill within SEMAP, we are thrilled for the opportunity Jason has to continue his work at MDAR. The job posting for the SEMAP Executive Director Position can be found here. We are pleased to have Todd Sandstrum serving an interim director as we look to fill Jason's shoes; Todd has been serving on the SEMAP board and as our treasurer for the past year and will be taking a brief leave of absence from his board position while he serves as interim director into the fall. On behalf of the SEMAP board and our Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Community - Thank You Jason - for sharing your energy & enthusiasm with SEMAP and best of luck in your new role - we know farmers across the state will benefit from your continued efforts on our behalf.

GREAT EVENTS FOR FARMERS, FOODIES, AND FAMILIES!

VEGETABLE FARMING

I took a bit of an early summer hiatus from Vine Articles as our family celebrated the arrival of our 3rd child, Walter back in early May... and while life hasn't quite slowed down I wanted to take a moment to share some "in-season" practical advice... if you have a topic which you would like to read about in an upcoming Vine please let me know.
Soil Testing in Late Summer...
If you are anything like us, adding another item to the to-do list in August may seem absurd, but that's what we are doing at Brix Bounty this August. Amidst the hustle of the harvest and the bountiful glory of cherry tomato season, we'll sneak a moment to pull soil samples and send them off to the lab so that we have current information as we make important fall fertility decisions. For some growers, cash flow may limit fertility improvements beyond cover crop seed for the early fall, however if you are considering fall lime applications or adding other amendments ahead of winter cover, now is a great time to test your fields before spending money on additional inputs. BUY LOCAL BLURB |
It's hard to believe that we're already getting towards the end of the summer. Fresh local food is so abundant right now; hope you've all been making weekly trips to the farmers market. Although fall seems pretty far away (especially since we've had our share of 90 degree days) we've already begun planning a lot of great events. Hoping you'll join us at our annual meeting on Sunday, November 1st at Oakes Ames Hall in Easton. We'll be updating you on what SEMAP has been doing over the past year (LOTS!), have a guest speaker, sample some local refreshments, and more! Save the date; we'll have the registration open soon.
As far as events happening right now...there are a ton! Whether you're a farmer or grower, a foodie, or looking for something to do with the kids, we've got you covered! Check out our event guide today! -Kendra
