JULY 2015
|
In agriculture, the end of one season signifies the beginning of the new. Life is like that too, and, for me, my new season has come. On July 20, the Massachusetts Board of Food and Agriculture voted unanimously to accept the Commissioner's recommendation and appoint me Assistant Commissioner for the Department of Agricultural Resources. I'm honored to have been chosen by Commissioner Lebeaux and I look forward to working with the entire MDAR team and supporting the mission of the department. Agriculture in Massachusetts is on the rise, and the department is critical in helping to supporting and sustaining that growth.
It's been a great pleasure to have served as Executive Director with SEMAP since September, and transitioning to my new role is rather bittersweet. I've met so many wonderful people in my tenure (both farmers and supporters of Ag) and I'd like to think we collectively have "moved the ball forward" for agriculture in Southeastern Massachusetts. Of course, there remains a great deal to be done, and I'm happy that Todd Sandstrum will be serving as interim Director to continue that forward progress. In addition to his counsel as a member of the Board, Todd has been like another staff member. He has worked on the ground and in the field with Kendra and me to ensure the success of many of our events and programs. Click here to continue reading...

BUY LOCAL BLURB |
It's here! Our 2015 Local Food Guide is hot off the press and we can't wait to get it into your hands. We'll be distributing our guide across Southeastern Massachusetts; be on the lookout for a list of where you can pick it up. I'll be at the Old Rochester Farmers Market next Tuesday from 3-7; come visit me at the SEMAP table and pick up a copy!
Did you make it out to our biggest summer event, Farm to Tapas? It was awesome! With 15 food vendors, guests were able to sample a variety of different items. There really was something for everyone. The Cocktail Guru was whipping up some awesome Farm to Glass drinks and Buzzards Bay Brewing, Westport Rivers, and Running Brook generously provided us with beer and wine. We had a great bluegrass music by The Woodshed String Band, and a wonderful live auction. Everyone had a great time; keep an eye out for the 2nd Annual Farm to Tapas. Many thanks to everyone who made this possible! Have event pictures? Email them over to me at kmurray@semaponline.org or tag us on Instagram @semapbfbl and we'll share them for you!
If you did miss out on Farm to Tapas, we hope you'll be able to make it to one of our vineyard tours next month! We'll be stopping by Coastal Vineyards on August 3rd and Running Brook on August 17th. Not a wine fan? There are lots of other great agriculture events, workshops, and fairs coming up soon; check out our event guide for fresh, local fun! -Kendra
