SEMAP Buy Local Update #10
Hey Everyone,

Apples, Peaches & Pears, oh my...

It has been a great season for many things; Blueberries, Strawberries, Tomatoes, and now APPLES!  Hannah, Ike and their potential future friends are the only things that could stop the fantastic flow of apples, peaches and pears from our Southeastern Ma. orchards.  Drive by your favorite fruit stand and check out how laden the branches are, with ripe, ready to eat fruit.  Sinking your teeth into a fresh apple is a great way to transition yourself into Fall.  Light, crisp, and juicy, local apples brighten up any chilly Fall morning or boring office lunch.  Be sure to pick up some local apple cider as well!  Great for cooking, drinking, (or fermenting) local cider keeps that tangy sweet apple taste flowing all winter long!

As always check out our Online Farm Guide for help with finding Pick-Your-Own (PYO), farmstands, and specialty products.

In case you haven't noticed... local food is fantastic!

These emails are designed to help you get started on your local food odysseys and inform you about the many ways you can help local agriculture, simply by buying fresh local products.

Every two weeks or so, you can expect an email updating you on:
  • What's Growin' - Local Foods that are in Season - Apples, Squash, Tomatoes & more!
  • Where You Can Purchase Them
  • And How you Can Further Support Local Producers - Harvest Events Galore!
SEMAP's mission is to help local farmers achieve economic success through marketing and technical assistance.  Now, we are also increasing our public outreach on Why, Where and How to buy fresh, local products.  SEMAP's 'Buy Fresh, Buy Local' Campaign makes it easy for you to find the best quality products from our terrific local farms and food businesses--look for the our new label and taste the difference! All over Southeastern Mass., this label will be at participating farmstands, farmers markets, restaurants and markets.

But there's MORE!

Be sure to check out our website at www.semaponline.org to search our Online Farm Guide where over 200 local farms can be searched by location, products, market outlets, and more.

Look for the 'Buy Fresh Buy Local' label, and taste the difference!

What's Growin'?

Tomatoes are still growing strong, with many great varieties available.  Paste, beefsteak, cherry, grape - you name it and local farms have it!  Mix some up into some soups, salads, sandwiches, or simply sliced with salt - buy a few pounds to freeze!  And don't forget the Apples!

The farms and businesses listed below are members of SEMAP's Buy Fresh, Buy Local Campaign and Business-to-Business Network. For complete information on these local producers and MANY MORE check out our Online Farm Guidewww.semaponline.org

Plus - Westport Rivers Vineyard to Launch 2 New Release wines at SEMAP Fundraiser!

Westport River Vineyard & Winery is excited to announce the upcoming release of their new 2007 Rkatsiteli and Pinot Gris.  Rkatsiteli has become an amazingly popular varietal from Westport Rivers. The light white that finishes with a touch of sweetness is widely planted in Eastern Europe but relatively unknown here in the States.  Pinot Gris is made in the traditional Alsatian style; it's clean, crisp, dry and pairs perfectly with the local flavors of the Southcoast.

Try the new Pinot Gris and Rkatsiteli before it's released only at SEMAP's October 4th Fundraiser, being held  at Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery.

Tickets are $35 and benefit SEMAP.  Please see ediblesouthshore.com for more information, or to purchase tickets go to the Westport Vineyard & Winery Events page or call 508-636-3423.
