SEMAP Buy Local Update #9
Hey Everyone,

Totally Tomatoes

My gosh, the summer has almost slipped by once again, and you can tell from the hundreds of ripe red, orange, purple and yellow tomatoes gracing our growers' farmstands.  Picking is easy out there with such a great crop of delicious (and safe!) local tomatoes.  Stop by on your way home or this weekend and pick up a pint of pure summer flavor, whether you're trying a beefsteak, cherry or roma variety, you'll love the fresh, clean local flavor!

As always check out our Online Farm Guide for help with finding Pick-Your-Own (PYO), farmstands, and specialty products.

What's Growin'?

Peak harvest time is approaching, and that means you can pick up just about anything/everything you need at your local farmstand and farmers market.  Herbs are still growing strong, which will combine perfectly with Tomatoes, Squash, Green Beans and Peppers.  There are many different varieties of each, so be sure to try them all!

The farms and businesses listed below are members of SEMAP's Buy Fresh, Buy Local Campaign and Business-to-Business Network. For complete information on these local producers and MANY MORE check out our Online Farm Guidewww.semaponline.org

Cookin' Local!
CA tomatoes
Tomato Bread
Soo Easy, yet Soooo Tasty!

On a quick visit to Spain (3-day blitzkrieg!) we ate this dish every morning.  The fresh, simple flavor of tomatoes and olive oil was a great way to wake up from those crazy Spanish nights and recharge for another round.  A recipe in Kerry D. Romanielly's local cookbook, Out of the Earth: A Heritage Farm Coastal Cookbook, explains its amazing simplicity and fantastic taste.  There are no speeding Vespas, or horrible 80's music, just great local flavor!

Ingredients:
1 fresh crusty French or Italian baguette, split lengthwise
2 juicy, very ripe tomatoes, split in half across the center
Olive oil & salt

Method:
Preheat the oven to 475 degrees, or prepare the grill.  Set out the two sides of the bread cut-side up.  Hold the tomatoes, one at a time over the bread and squeeze gently, then rub the tomato into the bread (kids love to do this part!) until both tomatoes are used.  Drizzle well with olive oil and sprinkle lightly with salt.  Place on a cookie sheet and toast in the oven until golden, or place cut-side down over medium coals to toast and color, being careful not to burn.  Serve immediately.
Makes 4-6 servings.

And Speaking of Tomatoes...check out this NEW local sauce!

www.westportrivers.com

Join the edible communities of Cape Cod, Boston and Rhody as we tastefully celebrate our newest edible in New England: edible South Shore!  Tastings and samplings from local food artisans and producers in Massachusetts' Plymouth and Bristol counties, as well as our other edible communities.

Plus - Westport Rivers Vineyard to Launch 2 New Release wines at SEMAP Fundraiser!

Westport River Vineyard & Winery is excited to announce the upcoming release of their new 2007 Rkatsiteli and Pinot Gris.  Rkatsiteli has become an amazingly popular varietal from Westport Rivers. The light white that finishes with a touch of sweetness is widely planted in Eastern Europe but relatively unknown here in the States.  Pinot Gris is made in the traditional Alsatian style; it's clean, crisp, dry and pairs perfectly with the local flavors of the Southcoast.

Try the new Pinot Gris and Rkatsiteli before it's released only at SEMAP's October 4th Fundraiser, being held  at Westport Rivers Vineyard & Winery.

Tickets are $35 and benefit SEMAP.  Please see ediblesouthshore.com for more information, or to purchase tickets go to the Westport Vineyard & Winery Events page or call 508-636-3423.
