Jacob Howard Walker
December 8, 1920 to March 20, 2016
Upper Merion Township pauses to mark the passing of Howard Walker on March 20, 2016 after a long and happy life followed by a brief hospice stay.
Howard served as a Township Supervisor from 1956 to 1961, on the 3-person Board with recently deceased Bill Ross.
Howard Walker worked with his two colleagues at organizing a form of government that could ease the transition from rural community to thriving metropolis. "We introduced the township manager type of government to get away from three guys running it out of a suitcase," recalled Walker, one of the few Democrats to be a supervisor in this Republican stronghold.
We thank him for his service to the community.

Unsolved 1929 Robbery-Murder
The UMT Police Department was established following the April 9, 1929 robbery-murder of a grocery store owner in Swedesburg. The crime was never solved and led to the denunciation of township officials by the Swedesburg residents. At the time, Swedesburg was the most heavily populated area in UM. The township was policed by two constables with assistance from the Bridgeport Police Department. Investigations were usually conducted by the State Police or the Norristown Police Department.
