E-HISTORY FACT |
Upper Merion Schools
Early schools in the township were located in private homes. Gulph School, founded in 1696 was one of the first. A little log school located on Mount Joy Manor, the Camp School, was founded in 1705 by Letitia Penn. In 1725, the Union School, first erected as a log house in Matthew Roberts' woods, was replaced by a stone structure that also served as the Upper Merion Township Building. In 1733, the Swede settlers ceased tutoring their children at home and built a small school building just outside the Old Swedes Churchyard in Swedesburg.
